Fans, especially Americans, have a tendency to abbreviate things. It's quicker to type "BT" instead of "Binaltech", or "HA" instead of "Human Alliance".

Now don't get me wrong, I'm totally okay with those, as long as everyone knows what they're referring to. For example, "TF" or the plural form "TFs" doesn't bother me in the slightest.

But then there are cases where a shorthand term can be confusing, or just looks idiotic or half-arsed. Those are the ones that annoy me.

    Some examples:

"OP" is confusing because sometimes it refers to Optimus Prime, but in other instances it's general message board lingo for "original poster", i.e. thread starter.

"Tformers" is a website for me (and not a particularly good one, but that's neither here nor there). If you mean "Transformers", why not just type "TFs", thus saving yourself five more characters and avoiding the confusion, as well as the fugly look of that semi-abbreviation?

Even worse is "TFers". What the hell? Considering the uppercase "TF" already stands for "Transformers", that means "TFers" stands for "Transformerers".

A new one I recently stumbled across: "TFilm". What's next, "OPrime"?

"SS" is particularly annoying because it alternatively stands for "Starscream", "Sunstreaker", "Sideswipe"/"Side Swipe", "Silverstreak", "Smokescreen" or "Sixshot". I actually recall a situation during the days of Alternators where someone talked about "Alt SS", and people were like "which one do you mean?"

And don't even get me started on that whole "CHUG"/"CHUGRU"/"CHUGURTS" nonsense.

    Any thoughts? Other examples?

    More:

Even back when TFClub.com was just a Chinese fansite, long before it became a third party group, it annoyed the hell out of me when people referred to the Transformers Collectors' Club (TCC) as "TFClub".

"FP" can either be "Fun Publications" or "FansProject". So the shorthand term can lead to a lot of confusion.

And does anyone else remember when people kept referring to Titanium as "Tits"? Because durr hurr, funny, duh. "TS" (Titanium Series) would have made much more sense, but this fandom is inherently immature.

Calling Hasbro Toy Shop "HTS" is fine. Calling the website "HTS.com" is dumb. I also recall an instance where someone referred to it as "HBS", with people immediately making fun of the guy by pointing out that it's not called "Has Brotoy Shop".

Abbreviating "The War Within" as "TWW" is fine. "WWI" is not only wrong ("War With In"?), but also misleading, especially since there's a Transformers/G.I. Goe crossover mini by Dreamwave set during World War II, which is occasionally referred to as the "WWII crossover".

this is the only one that bothers me. and as for "SS" i can see where that can get confusing. that's why i use "Screamer" as an abbreviation instead. "SW" is still Soundwave to me

To be honest, abbreviations themselves don't irk me. It's only when I don't know what they stand for am I irked.

What the heck is CHUG? I can chug Dr Pepper like a boss, but in this context, I dunno.

"OP", "SS", and the like are fine as long as the context is clear. Starting off a discussion with those abbreviations is not a good idea, but if it's clear you're talking about "Starscream" and not "Side Swipe" or "Sunspot" or whoever "SS" is totally fine.
Plus, wouldn't you generally refer to the original post(er) as "the OP"?

I don't like using "CHUG", but it does instantly tell me what people are talking about. Plus, I'm not sure what a better shorthand for that would be.

"RiD" used to describe the Prime figures annoys me because I associate the abbreviation with the series that gave us Sky-Byte. I also don't like PRiD(e) or TF:p  (the latter because so many people don't bother to check if it'll become a smiley); I prefer to call it simply "Prime."

BB kinda gets me, but only when I try and talk about the character BB. Everytime he Ctrl+F's his name on a page he weeps.

"SW" could also be Shockwave or Skywarp.

The ones that bother me are CHUG (just sounds silly, especially the newer variants trying to cram in the rest of the follow on lines) and PRiD (PRIDE strikes me as particularly silly as well). The former I prefer to think of simply as "Classics" and the latter as "Prime Mainline" since there's only one true RiD in my mind.

I've also never been a fan of "Bayformers" as a shorthand for the movie series.

I dislike "PRID" because "PRIDE" is clearly superior.

A fallacy of most radical extremes.

I take great pride in my PRIDE figures.
