I received a package today from Japan for an item I bought on eBay. Apparently the seller, without my knowledge, gave a false declaration and USPS circled the false declaration on the package with a marker. Do I owe customs or USPS any penalties? The post officer didn't say anything. Thanks.

Technically it would be his fault, not yours, that he committed customs fraud.

What's the item if you don't mind sharing?

I know that when I ship an item to international buyers, most of the time I'll get a request from them to put down $20 as the declared value. I've done this a few times before.

If they didn't say something to you, you probably are in the clear.

....or the FBI opened a file on you and are secretly monitoring you. Better watch what you say on the phone or in an email. In fact, this thread will be used by prosecutors in your trial. Good luck.

How would USPS know the actual value? Do they just compare the declared value with the ebay receipt?

No problem, the item was just an imported electronic toy from Japan.

It seems they opened up my package because I have US customs tape over what seems like cut packaging tape. The false declaration came about because the seller specified "book" on the package slip when it was a toy.

They open packages over there? For the UK (AFAIK) They just check the value and call it quits.

Ohh, I just assumed fraud would have something to do with value, not content. I've never one had an overseas package opened on me.

Speaking of which, I'm thinking about getting some dildo boxes & whatnot for the sake of trolling people when I send toys out, be it the buyer or customs peeps.

I've never had anything opened, and I do a lot of buying from overseas. There was probably something suspicious about "book" or (as you said, it had electronics) it set off a metal detector or something along the way, giving them cause for concern.

Why was it listed as a book instead of as a toy? What's the point?
    Argh! That's not good. :lol

It may be more cheap to ship certain items than others.
