Relatives from the old country have sent me some VHS tapes in the European recording format.

They do not work in my Canadian VCR.

What's the easiest way to view these tapes. (Easy means cheap, btw.)

    Thank you!

Get a European VCR? That's the only thing I can think of.

As VCR's are so cheap now you should be able to pick one up cheaply. Probably a stupid question, but you don't know anyone with a VCR that would play them? It may be worth asking, I've got a mate that transfers NTSC vids for me as he has an all singing/dancing VCR. Otherwise you could get them transferred by a business that specialises in converting formats, but it may be cheaper to buy a PAL VCR.

    Thank you.

So I should be looking for a "PAL VCR".
Any recommended On line Vendors. I'm Canadian and would prefer something out of Canada/Toronto.

    Thank you again.

Ironically, you'd probably be able to get rid of you current VCR if you end up buying one from this part of the world since NTSC support is pretty much standard in all but the cheapest gear over here.

Shoulden't be a problem if your TV supports PAL, althougth you'd still need a voltage converter for the mains.

PAL is the display format, I think the screen size is slightly smaller and it has less lines for the resolution, although that might not be exactly correct. It is a PAL VCR you'd need though. PAL = Europe, NTSC = US. I don't know if you'd get a multi-format VCR where you are, over here you can buy ones that will play both formats. You could possibly sell your current VCR and get one that covers both, a lot of modern ones will. Hope you find a solution.

I wondered about this, a mate tells me though that a NTSC tape will display on a PAL TV here, the TV should display the signal it gets from the VCR. Would be worth checking though.

You need a Pal VCR and a PAL compatible TV

You won't need a voltage converter as you are going lower, not higher

VCR's start about £30 in the UK ($60USD)

    Cheers

PAL has better resolution and colour, but a lower refresh rate.

How many tapes are we talking about? Is it REALLY worth it.

I learned my PAL/NTSCC lesson 10 years ago from a massive order placed with Eastern Heroes in the UK. $120 bucks for tapes that show up as a black screen.

One was City Hunter. AKA Jackie Shit.

I only have about 3 tapes. And the content is going to be pretty bad.
Thus my desire to do it cheap.

Thank you for all your help though. I know what to look for and the associated technical challenges. The power of the interweb works its majics.
