Ok so after looking at my meager collection of mostly movie stuff, I've decided that apart from Animated and Universe, I will adopt a quality over quantity philosophy so, to the more experienced types in here, what would you recommend from all of the eras/franchises as "indispensable"? This way I can consolidate it into a list and kinda get organized on my collecting. Mind you my only criteria is that it is either way awesome or articulated. Thanks!

The first figs in my head would be those from the Masterpiece line. Aside from that, a few awesome figs I would suggest are:

    Galaxy Force Convoy/Cybertron Prime
G2 Laser Prime, or the ever popular Black Convoy from Car Robots (Scourge from RiD)
Galaxy Force First Gunner/Cybertron CD Red Alert
    Galaxy Force/Cybertron Primus
Armada/Energon Unicron (The Energon version has a black paint scheme if you're into that)
    Victory Leo
    Star Saber
Fortress/Grand/Brave Maximus- It's the largest Transformer ever made...must have

    That'll get you started!

    RID
    Scourge
    Prime (he's a fire truck, but he's a kick-ass fire truck)
Magnus (to go with Prime, it's kinda lame on its own)

I'll agree with what's already been said for Cybertron. Not gonna throw anything in, unless you can get ahold of a Toys Dream Project Dark Fang Wolf. Soundwave (will be redone as Blaster in Universe), deluxe Unicron, and Sideways (will be redone as Ratbat in Universe) are pretty good, too.

Energon: For whatever reason, I'm still getting figures from the line, but I don't really like any of them unusually well... Except Sharkticon, but others will beg to differ.

    Armada: Four letters. P-A-S-S.

    Universe 1.0 (funky recolors):
Nemesis Prime (Beast Wars Neo Big Convoy recolor)- superior deco of an awesome mold.

    Classics 1.0:
Mirage (will be redone as Fracture in Movie line)

    6-inch Titanium:
    The Fallen
SDCC Menasor (especially if you do Botcon stuff, it fits right in)

Just going through what I have on display, that's about it. Universe (the coming line) has you taken care of for good molds... Lame colors, but the molds are there.

G1: What I have isn't worth keeping but it's here anyway
G2: I only have a Cyberjet, but I have some of the molds (Laser Prime mold, Hero Megatron mold) and I like what I have.
Alternators: Subaru, Mustang, Corvette, and Scion are all good in their own special way. I've had a few more than that, but nothing was amazing (I'm regretting getting rid of the Ram, but it wasn't anything special.)

    Wheelie!
If you are a transformers fan without a Wheelie toy you are a loser!:lol

Other than that I'm not to sure what you're tastes are.

If you like Beast modes they're are plenty of fine molds in Beast wars.
Such as the transmetal two faction leaders, Silverbolt, Transmetal Cheetor ect.
The line also made extensive use of ball joints, so articulation isn't really a problem.
Although some of the mold have balance issues that can make it hard to pose them.

Most of what I own is either Classics or Beast Wars so I don't have that much experience.

Although I agree that the G2 Laser Prime Mold is awesome.
I have the E-hobby Ultra Magnus version.

A question for others or have it, Mine likes to make himself short if left in a neutral position. Is this a universal problem for the mold?

well that's the thing I'm my (relative) old age i've learned to appreciate all phases of transformers even beast machines :) gasp I know!) and I understand that most have awesome figures and I kinda want a collection that encompasses all forms of transformers. And yea blitzfire revoltech figures are pretty good from what I've heard! where can I get em?

I like the Masterpieces, Alternators, Takara TFC bookstyle collection, Encore and e-hobby stuff. That is about all I have in my collection(basically Masterpiece/Alts and G1). You should pick up Masterpiece Magnus and Skywarp.

G1 Optimus, autobot cars, Megatron, Soundwave, Jetfire, Shockwave, Dinobots, and Insecticons are a good way to go. If you want to try out a G1 combiner, I suggest you get a Predaking.
MP 01 is probably the best toy in the past 20yrs (IMO) The other MP's are not bad either.
Binaltech/Alternators have a couple of nice molds. Fortress Maximus is ok if you want a big toy, but not all that impressive otherwise. The alt modes look kinda abstract. Classics are good for less expensive toys.

Masterpiece Convoy ticks both the way awesome & articulated boxes. So I reckon that should be on your list :)  Then it's just a case of whether you want MP-1, or the MP-4 set that includes his trailer..

Just to give a different opinion.
From what I've seen pics of. While the paint quality is better on most of them, I prefer most of the classics Color schemes more.

Only real exception to that would be Astrotrain.
Neither of the version of the toy have been in my possession so I can't really judge that.

So I guess if you're looking to get some classics. Give both versions of a toy a good look over before making a decision. Although the Henkei versions might be easier to find.

    • Hero Megatron

    Beast Wars:
    • Silverbolt (Fuzor)
    • Inferno
    • Scorponok

    Armada:
    • Deluxe Optimus Prime
    • Hasbro's Nemesis Prime
    • Takara's Standard Black Convoy
    • Jetfire (or his Powerlinx version in blue)
    • Micron Legend Shockwave (show accurate version unlike Hasbro's release of Tidal Wave)
    • Thrust (or his Powerlinx version in Dirge's colors or his second Powerlinx version in G1 Thrust's colors)
    • Wheeljack (if you want it show accurate you'll need Micron Legends Rampage instead)
    • Thundercracker
    • Skywarp
    • Astrotrain (Club Exclusive remold of Jetfire)

    Universe 1.0:
    • Target Exclusive Nemesis Prime (recolor of BWN Big Convoy)

    Alternators:
    • Nemesis Prime (recolor of Optimus Prime)

    Cybertron:
    • Excellion

    • Soundwave

    Beast Wars 10th Anniversarry:
    • Optimus Primal
    • Megatron

    Pre-Beast Wars Botcon Figures:
Would only recommend tracking these down if you love BW as some are a tad expensive now.

    • Waspinator
    • Megatron

    Classics 1.0:

    • Dirge

    Animated:
    • You should be as much a completionist with this line as you will be with Universe/Classics 2.0

    the above list is perfect

i would just add pretty much any encore reissue as they are not going to get cheaper and also THS 02 Convoy......Best G1 prime in my opinion, He is basically a masterpiece with more accessories and a smaller scale

    Don't like those figures? :)

Also, I should just point out that I was mainly joking about Animated, but to be honest everything that I've bought so far has been exceptional. Frankly, this is one great line.

Despite the maligning theat BM gets, I'm gonna throw out another vote for BM Tankor, simply because I've just dug him back out, and sometimes I forget just how cool a fig he is. Good looking tank mode, good looking robot mode, fantastic articulation. No, he doesn't look like in the show (that's the Tank Drone's job), but if we're honest, I don't think that's anywhere near always a bad thing. The toy version can handle stairs. :p
