Please name three to five essential toys from the Beast Era that a self-respecting TF collection should have. Basic stuff to cool stuff especially! I don't really want to avoid this important period of Transformers toys.

I am a total G1-er and have collected completely around the Beast Era. I'm down with G2, with RID, and everything that followed. I'm watching the BW series with my son but I didn't have any connection to in my collection at any time in the past.

    I'd appreciate any help!

This is going to be hard, so many great figures from that series.

    Transmetal Megatron (Japan version)
    Depth Charge
    Rampage
    Optimal Optimus
    TM 2 Dinobot

I would really suggest into going beyond five or three. There are so many great figures in that line.

Original BW Dinobot, Bat Optimus/Crock Megatron, the fuzor Quickstrike (easily my favorite basic), and then there's always the collection of Transmetals that're very pretty. :)

I was in the exact same position as you about 18 months ago. The guys in the Beast Wars Appreciation thread helped me so much. I am now one figure away from completing my show cast line up of BW figures.

    My favourites would be:

    TM-SP DX (Telemocha) Megatron
    TM-01 (Telemocha) Optimus Primal
Transmetal Tarantulas (Takara Metals version has a lsightly better paint job but either is great)
    Transmetal Cheetor
Transmetal Rattrap (the Takara metals version doesn't seem to have the same chrome flaking issue as the Hasbro version does)
Takara Metals Transmetal Megatron (don't even bother with the Hasbro version, the plastic will crumble on you)
    Optimal Optimus

...and I know he's not offically a toy released during the time the Beast Wars show aired, but my favourite figure from the show out of them all is Henkei Dinobot.

    If you're talking US-only then I'd recommend:

    TM Rampage
    Optimal Optimus
    TM2 Megatron
    TM Cheetor
    Inferno

If you include the Japanese only toys add Big Convoy to the top of the list and bump Inferno off.

Also, if you want non show toys pick up Ramulus. He is probably my favorite Transmetal 2 toy (unfortunately I'm selling mine though :( )

Hmmm... I have almost all of them... My Favorites are
    TM2 OpOp
Waspanator (just becuse I loved seeing him blown up Lol)
    TM Rattrap
    TM Cheetor
    Ravage
TM Megatron (and yea get the Takara version for previously posted reasons)
    3 Preds 3 Max

If you like having Preds and Max the same size then replace Rattrap or Cheetor with 1. Depthcharge 2. Tigerhawk.

I may have an extra TM Tarantulas, Fuzor Silverbolt and Fuzor Quickstike avalible for trade or what ever I'd have to check my surplus box when I get home. PM me if your intrested. Not sure what the going rate is but I am more than reasonable for fellow collectors.

Ha, I like this thread, I stopped collecting at G2, picked up in the late 2000s.

Aside from Universe Dinobot (a MUST!) I have picked up Transmetal Rattrap, Takara gray Optimus Primal (box signed by Garry Chalk), 10th anniversary Waspinator, and Universe white Leo Prime.

Still want to get Silverbolt (finish the Scott McNeil collection) and the freakishly expensive Metals Ravage.

So much good stuff in the Beast Era - ah, the days before every mold got repainted.

I'll pick one per size class.

Terrorsaur is the epitome of the Basics - simple, easy, yet good looking in both modes.

TM Cheetor is my favorite deluxe. non-intrusive gimmick, show-accurate, and just kinda fun.

There are a lot of great Megas, but TM2 Cybershark is just too detailed, articulate, and cool looking to not be the best in my book. AND it's been redone into Sky-Byte!

Ultras don't give one a lot to choose from, but I'm gonna have to go with Magmatron here just for creativity, fun, and overall looks.

Finally, for the big stuff, you can't beat Optimal Optimus/Primal Prime. Tons of poseability, great looking, and lots of modes.

    the Primals/Convoys
original Ultra Optimus Primal (you can get the re-issues)

I agree with everyone so far.

Cybershark is a great, detailed sculpt, but I'd skip him and track down an R.I.D. Skybite since he's got some fantastic paint apps that make that bring it all to life.

I'm completely in love with Big Convoy, as well as Heinrad, Cohadra, and a few other Neo figures. The Neo dinosaurs and their U.S. repaints are pretty nice. The triceratops is perhaps a little less nice, but his 3rd "trap" mode is a hilarious and disturbing dead triceratops.

There are some terrible recommendations in here...

If you want to stick to show characters then I would suggest getting the TRU 10th anniversary Ultra sized Megatron and Optimus Primal. I would dare say that they might be the highpoint of the whole line. Their first Transmetal toys are also good. The Fuzors Quickstrike and Silverbolt are excellent toys too. Aaand Transmetal Tarantulus is golden. Poor headsculpts are really the main negative for BW toys.

If you don't want to be restricted to show toys then I would recommend Vicegrip, Bonecrusher and Terragator - but I don't think many people would call them "essential."
