At least, that's what Paramount is hoping for.

    From Joblo.com:

"Paramount tried to get a FORREST GUMP sequel off the ground when the first one raked in gobbles of cash and established Tom Hanks as a bonafide international superstar. They even convinced original sribe Eric Roth to pen the script, which was based on the sequel novel "Gump & Co." written by original novel author Winston Groom (FORREST GUMP was based on Groom's novel of the same name). However, rights issues had seemingly resigned the film to a permanent resting place in development hell. Josh over at Cinema Blend has gotten word, though, from an "absolutely reliable" source that they've resolved the rights issues, Roth's script has been resurrected and Paramount is indeed looking to give us another world-changing adventure from the lovably dense shrimp boat captain. Of course, they still have to convince Tom Hanks to reprise the role. He may not be too keen to slap on the checkered shirt and tight pants once again. Read CB's report HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Two of the many historical events in which Forrest once again inadvertently becomes involved in the sequel are the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the fall of the Berlin Wall."

Like any sequel this could be good or bad

Not sure if it really warrants a sequel though, the first one is one of my favorite movies and it ended right from what I thought. Though I'd love to see how gump is involved in the Berlin wall

and anyone else thinking weird Al could make a new version of gump too?

I don't think Forrest Gump is the sort of movie that really warrants a sequel. I've always felt that it was one of those films that just plain ends, and you just assume that everyone lives "happily ever after"...

I have this nagging feeling that any sort of "Gump 2" would probably end up being a string of rehashed jokes from the first film, only set in modern times. Still, it could very well turn out to be a decent movie (assuming it gets made in the first place).

I'd have to read the novel sequel to speculate whether the movie sequel would be good or bad, or makes sense as a story.

Oh yeah! Well, the movie would end by 1990 or thereabouts.

Personally, I'd rather see "Big" or "Splash" sequels made. Or a new "Bosom Buddies" series greenlighted.

I thought it was cancer :inquisiti  Edit: oops, it wasn't cancer... just looked it up.

They should leave it alone IMO. It was a fine, heart warming movie, but the secual would be more over the top BS.

Plus Haley Osmond is in rehab and old.

Count me in on the 'they should leave it alone' side. I thought the first one was great. No need to make a sequel.

No good can come of this. I don't see Hanks signing up for it either.

Hanks as Gump would be like Frakes playing Riker again in the Enterprise finale, with everyone pretending he's not a decade older and fat.

Forrest Gump was a great movie for me. At first, before I watched it, I was sure that if I ever saw the whole thing, I'd regret it. Now that I did watch the film, the only thing I regret was that I should've watched it sooner! :lol  I'm with the people who don't want a sequel; leave this movie alone. I REALLY don't wanna see a Forrest Gump 2. But, if they went ahead and did it, then they're gonna have to show what Gump's been doing since the early 90's. I mean, a LOT has changed since the movie's first showing. He should be in events like these:

-Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky
-The creation of Microsoft Windows 98
    -The big Y2K scare
-9/11 (somehow, I don't think that event should be done...)
    -The war in Iraq
-Saddam Hussein finally being captured (you know, it'd be kind of funny if Gump just happened to pass by Iraq, and just see Saddam, and say to some people close by that he sees a bearded guy in a hole. It might just work)
