I was wondering if there are any ways in which I could tell whether a misb Energon Leader Optimus Prime is the mouthed or faceplate version by looking at the package?

Yes, back in the day the one without the faceplate had a different item/sku number/product code.

I don't remember what it was unfortunately.

Is is a black box or red box? The red box will definitely be mouthless.

I'm at work right now, but I remember specifically looking for the faceplate version back in the day and got one. I still have the box in the basement and it has a product code stamped on the bottom. I'll pull that tonight and post the number, and yours will also be the faceplate version if your number is the same number or higher. If it's lower it likely will be the mouth version, since I picked up my Prime with faceplate as soon as I found one. Back then I was very active as far as buying new product the instant it was available, a habit formed by Alternators collecting. :lol

I don't remember the box color changing for E. Optimus Prime... not saying it didn't happen, but I only remember the packaging change happening with the Energon scouts, deluxes, megas, ultras and galvatron as he was the only leader figure to receive a repaint.

Wasn't there a number imprinted into the cardboard on the back of the box and that was how you could tell the difference? Or was that for the Armada Prime with the modified shoulder joint and super mode leg connectors?

Oh noze a variant I didn't have!!! :banghead:

It's discoveries like this that make me glad I'm a reformed completionist.

My Energon Prime (the one I didn't sell) has the mouth so I can try to dig up that number tonight as well.

Yup, mine is this one. So the red one has to be the faceplate version and the black one is either? Btw, thanks for the input guys.

^^ Yes, that's it. That's the resource I used originally. Excellent find, ams!

Thanks ams! But the only 5 digit number I could find was in the front and it is 80306....I don't think this could have been made in 2008 lol. Perhaps mine has no time stamp?

It is an embossed number into the cardboard. The easiest way to find it is to hold the box so that you get glare across the whole side, then look for the indentations.

Usually the Date Stamp code will either be near the barcode, or on the bottom of the back of the box.

Weird, I examined the whole box and there seems to be no indentations, stamps, code, or anything.

:lol  And not only did Prime get shipped in both boxes, so did Megatron in his original grey/green deco (yes, I personally saw one at TRU in 2006, proper art and all)!

On mine it's to the right of the barcode almost to the "CE" symbol.

Nope, nothing on mine. What the heck, is it possible for it not to have a stamp? I've held all sides of the box under the light and its all smooth. No indents, numbers, nothing!

Yes, a good many of the early shipments didn't have that indicator. That indicator number is basically the "sure fire" bet of getting a faceplate Prime, but for a few months both were shipped basically concurrently.
