Have you ever been in a room for a long time, with an electric fan on (the kind that stand, not ceiling fans), and after a while it sounds like a muffled TV is on in the next room - so much that you think it is, and eventually turn the fan off, and all the TV-ish voices stop?

I don't. I'm just doing whatever, and end up noticing the oddness of the sounds the fan makes.

I've lived with electric fans of this type all my life, and I've never once encountered the phenomenon of which you speak.

Yeah, that's a little weird. Can't say I've ever heard that before, just your normal oscillation sound and odd clicking.

The sound coming through the floor of the ceiling fan downstairs is a little reminiscent of the sounds the Martian Fighting Machines made in the '53 War of the Worlds film. Speech? No.

I have always had fans for sleeping. I need the white noise or I wake too easily. So, I've listened to them quite a bit, and depending on the placement of my ears there there can be some odd sounds, but not like muffled TV. There's probably a couple demons living in your white noise. Try listening to running water for a while and listen for the same sound, that way you know the demons are there. Just don't listen to whatever it is they're telling you to do.

I'm not all that surprised. Between the range of hearing differences we all have and the range of oscillation for the fan blades, it may just be that your brain is picking up those sounds and translating it into something it understands. Not really that uncommon, most people just ignore it or pretend they don't hear it. That being said, I welcome our new Fan Overlords and shall follow their every command to the best of my ability.
