Im heading to Botcon this year, and an wondering if i should bother looking for stuff on ebay between now and then for some stuff I will probably find at the con.

On average would i get a better bargain in person or on ebay?

Also there are a number of G1 parts im looking to get, and $5 for a gun on ebay may seem steep. Are there alot of parts for sale at cons? and if so cheaper than what i can find online?

do some research on EBay, then write down the average price per part (including shipping) that you want, and then go to BotCon with that info, and see if you can get any better deals, if you can, golden, if not, well then no harm done ;)

I would hold out for Botcon. That last Cybercon I went to a dealer had a two dollar bin of parts. I got some good stuff too.

Never been to botcon but I would figure it'd be worth waiting. There's probaby tons of stuff that people have for sale but couldn't sell online because shipping would make it too expensive.

Definately Botcon. I bought a ton of BW figs at OTFCC '04 that would've cost twice as much on ebay.

I'd wait for Botcon personally. I'd heard stories of the dealer room being way overpriced, but I didn't really find that to be the case when I actually went to one. And hey, if you feel like it is, ebay will still be there when you get back home.

Well, here's what I'd do. Go on e-bay and research prices and if you happen to see a good deal, go for it. Everything else, hold out for Botcon. No shipping charges, instant gratification, plus you can start a thread bragging (or lamenting) how much money you spent. (Last year I spent $600 U.S. it's addictive baby! )

ebay will always be there so just wait til botcon. Whatever you can't find at botcon for a good deal you can always get on ebay afterwards. Be careful though. Alot of the botcon dealer prices are rip-offs because they know people are willing to spend like crazy there. Lots of impulse buying. Like some have mentioned, do some research on ebay first as to what the average prices are. You can haggle with the dealers too to try to bring the price down. You may want to wait til the last day (Sunday) to find some really good deals. Most dealers by Sunday really want to get rid of their stuff since want to carry as little stuff as possible back home so they are looking to unload whatever they have left. Also, if you're going to buy something that has electronics, test it out to make sure the electronics works, particular if they say it works. I bought a G1 trypticon and was told it works. I trusted him and so didn't bother testing it (mainly cuz I didn't have batteries with me) and when I got home...didn't work. Obviously I couldn't return it since I have no idea where to find the dealer. I didn't feel so bad since I bought the thing with dealer dollars I won from a contest but still sucked.

I prefer to buy in person if I can. No shipping, you can haggle the price a bit, and you get a really good look at it. I did great at Cybercon last year despite not having that much money with me, and I saw some great deals on things. Mostly cheaper ehobby stuff, like $15-25 below ebay norms.

Thursday night at the hotel I believe there's going to be a parts party. From what I heard you can find good deals and all the parts you need then. You don't have to spend your time in the dealer room looking for parts. Hope you find what you need. See ya there.

You really can't go wrong holding out for Botcon. As it's been said, Ebay will still be there when you get back, and you know what the prices will be.

    Advantages of buying at Botcon:
    No shipping costs.
    No over-inflated shipping costs.
No broken toys due to poor packaging.
    No "handling" fees.
No waiting 2 weeks for the seller to ship.
No finding out the dealer never shipped.
You get to see the item in person before you buy.
    No sniping.

    Disadvantages of buying at Botcon:
    You have to go there.
    It will be crowded.
Many Transfans don't shower or wear deordorant.

Unless that last one is a dealbreaker, I'd say wait for Botcon.

Frankly, I've never had much luck at the "parts parties". Too much chaos. When I am holding a box with literally $1000 worth of toy parts in my hands, I don't want chaos.

All I can go with is my own experience here.
And my experience of Botcon's dealer room last year was mainly comprised of getting a MIB PERFECT condition G1 Starsaber, with all paperwork and unapplied stickers, for $275. :)

Yep, that certainly was a good deal!
I'd go for the dealer room. Ebay will always be there, and you can get a lot of stuff cheap. At Auto Assembly I got a whole bunch of odd TFs for practically nothing.
