Useless facts ahead!! Actually...people do fight fire with fire. It's called a controlled burn. You set off a fire to clear out undergrown and debris to lower the risk of an uncontrollable fire later on. It's also one of the ways to create a firebreak in the path of an oncoming fire. In some cases, you can use a fire to choke off the incoming air that feeds a wildfire, lowering its intensity and making it easier to control.
I didn't even know about this stupid "Earth Hour" thing until after it happened, otherwise I would have done the same thing Cobalt Agent did. Gawd, as if I didn't already hate environmentalism enough...
I was downtown at the time, and I saw somebody had twelve searchlights on the entire time. Either they didn't know about it, or they were trying to cancel everybody else out. Either way, it was funny.
I didn't know about it until I happened to go to Google during it. They had changed their background from white to black, and had a blurb below the search box stating they had turned off their lights, encouraging me to do the same, and providing a link to info about Earth Hour. Mind you, they didn't disable any of Google's functionality. So not only did they "support" it without actually supporting it, they probably used a smidge more energy bothering with changing the main page than they would've if they'd just left it alone. Laughablly full of FAIL.
More or less. It still said "Google". It was just like it is today, just subsitute black for white and add a blurb. I dunno. *shrugs* I'd think editing the page code would take up slightly more juice than leaving it as is. I'm sure it'd be nothing remotely significant. Either way, this quote would indicate Blackle (or black Google) probably doesn't achieve its intended goal. (Found by following links in Blackle's "about" page.) Of course, I have no idea if "Ogma" knows anything about anything.
I saw that chicago was a huge success with earth hour. So I hear. http://www3.earthhourus.org/chicago.php Not sure if this link will work?+ EDIT: I work at a Hydro Dam in MD I hear about this stuff all the time. It is sent out in a mass e-mail and is on the front page of our company's site.
