UPDATE 9/14/18: This model kit is now for sale in my Shapeways shop.

Moving right along in the series of cassette minicons I'm developing for DX9's legends class Soundwave, here's a shot of Ratbat in progress:

All that remains are the wings and some finishing details, which I hope to complete this week.

My son said it looked like a wolf, so I played around with it a little before roughing out the wing segments.

All joints are done. I still have some detailing to finish, but it's coming along very nicely.

Thanks so much for the awesome feedback, everyone.

This project's moving along very, very nicely. I had wanted to have it ready to print by the end of the weekend, but my kid asked me to help him build a giant Unicron head, which isn't something you can really say no to. I'm anxious to see how this prints out and assembles. It's got some pretty thin parts that may end up too frail, like outsize edge of the wing, and some new joints for me in the folding wings. Everything else at play is tried and true from my prior works.

I tried to be as true to the character as I could and take as few liberties as possible. Mine turned out much more batlike in design since I couldn't do the wings the same as the G1 toy and cartoon. I also had to tone down the head a bit to get it to work in the space I had to use. All in all I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, considering that he's usually just a Laserbeak repaint with a different head.

All that remains is sprue layout and a flight stand attachment accessory and this bat'll be ready to fly.

I use Fusion 360 from Autodesk for 3d design work. It's free and really easy to use. I provide more info on that here, if you're interested.

I'm not sure. I've never used Maya before, but did consider it before starting on this path. I ultimately went with Fusion because it was free, intuitive and easy to pick up, and it's got built in cloud collaboration tools for multiple people on one project.

Without digging too deep, I know they had a free "entrepreneur" license option when I got started. I don't know if they got rid of that, or if it's really buried on their site to entice people to pay. There's a free 3 yr learning license option you can get in on to try it out.

Last I checked (which was admittedly more than a year ago), you could get a free license as a student or hobbyist. Mine expired a while back and I haven't tried to renew it so I don't know what their current model is. Sadly I never really learned the software (I'd already learned Blender and wasn't up for self teaching myself another program at the time).

Looking very cool. Please share a link to your Shapeways store, so all of us that admire your work can get these wonderful little guys to go with our Soundwaves.

Soon, I swear! I wrapped up Ratbat and my revisions to Laserbeak earlier today. Hopefully I can get Frenzy finished tonight so that I can order prints of all three. As soon as I have them in hand I should be able to list them publicly.

@NOCV I salute thee.. You have inspired me to begin work on some of my own Custom ideas. These little guys are SO COOL. Cannot wait to acquire some of your designs for my collection. Can't wait to recreate the "Nobody calls Soundwave Un-Crazzamatic" scene in Legends scale!

That's awesome, and so humbling. Thanks so much!

Yesterday I ordered fixed legs for Frenzy & Rumble, a fixed Laserbeak & Buzzsaw, and Ratbat, in addition to working on their product pages. I'm super-excited for this batch because I think the birds and boys will finally be ready to sell, and hopefully Ratbat too.

Barring any changes, I should have the pricing as trimmed down as I can too. The model kits for Frenzy and Rumble are $17 for one or $29 for both, Laserbeak and Buzzsaw are $15 for one or $25 for the both, and Ratbat comes in at $14.
