I saw a couple of pieces of Transformers art from Dustin Weaver (the artist for Jonathan Hickman's SHIELD among other things) which resulted from a negative reaction to the movie aesthetic. I like the film aesthetic, and it's no wonder Animated and Prime have aped Movie Megatron's evil king look so much. What do you think? Dustin Weaver Draws His Little Heart Out
I think as a response to the movie aesthetic it's a pretty poor one. The detail is inconsistent, Megatron's face looks terrible next to all that detail, and it's more of a "plates over random machinery" look than the actual designs. Big, underdetailed parts next to skinny, over-detailed bits looks like they're missing components. There's no flow, no real aesthetic and the proportions are awful. These seem like a half-hearted attempt at blending G1 and movies, but ends up missing the strong points of both and ends up ugly and inconsistent. The actual drawings are great, but the designs are just terrible.
i think it is pretty good, but the chest and heads don't really match up with the more detailed limbs.
I think as a stand alone aesthetic it's pretty awesome and unique! As a response to the Movieverse aesthetic? No, just no...
It's so... inconsistent. Some parts are G1, others are movie trash stuffed into general shapes. I don't like it. A full on IDW-ish approach would be better than this "blend."
My thoughts exactly. Not to mention it kind of makes Optimus look like he's wearing a corset. It just looks so skinny near all the joints.
Nice efforts, but... no. There are much better executed ideas out there that successfully pull off what this guy is also trying to do.
I think it looks pretty awesome. His Prime looks better in the 2nd pic with Megatron though. I see the artist is pretty opinionated ; his right, but yeah... still very opinionated.
Please note: I'm not knocking the guy, as he appears to be a very talented artist. I quite like his art. And I don't mind his designs either. His Optimus is pretty awesome, but I just think his Megatron is a bit 'bleh' (again, nothing negative about his skill, simply the aesthetic with Megatron).
It's not bad though it too G1 looking. Try to make the design different while still feeling reminiscent of G1. I know it sounds unreasonable but that'd be my perfered choice.
I couldn't have said it better myself. This guy has definite skills but the designs just don't flow. It's a mismatch of different aesthetics that don't gel at all.
It's just G1 with some panels removed to make it look complex, which only succeeds in making it look incohesive.
I actually really like these designs. If there are anymore "alternate movie" designs, that are closer to G1, I'd really like to see them. Only problem I have is inconsistent levels of detail. Too much in some areas, too little in others.
Nice artwork, but not movie material. The movieverse, in my opinion, is far more superior and perfect in every way.
