It's pretty much a comedic police show starring Paul Gross who other than this, is mostly known for his work in Men with Brooms & The Red Green Show as a minor (yet somewhat reoccurring character). I'm not sure how big Due South got outside of Canada, but it aired from 94-99 over here (which I believe took place after a movie of the same title), and why it took me this long to get into it is beyond me.

Has anyone else seen or liked this show?

    Hahah, Cylon.

I haven't seen a lot of episodes with him in it, but the ones I have weren't bad because they had to do with the real Ray coming back out of his deep cover. I remember being young & never being all that interested in a "show about mountie", which is a real shame because had I seen even a few minutes, I know I'd have been hooked, even at a younger age.

Also, I hear the theme song playing in my head all the time

I loved this show. I was really bummed when CBS cancelled it, but a few years later i got a nice surprise when I found out that it was being syndicated on TNT. The big surprise, though, was that there was a new actor playing Ray. I'd never heard about the extra season or two that were aired solely in Canada before that. Mind you, I still preferred David Marciano over Callum Keith Rennie, but it was still great to get more of the show (and the Rennie seasons had some really great episodes, like that two-parter with the freighter). I've had the whole series on dvd for years now and being reminded about the show kinda makes me want to go dig them back out.

I liked Deifenbaker the deaf wolf, and I'm convinced that the mountie was the inspiration for Captain Carrot in Terry Pratchetts books.

Another great program from a similar time was Northern exposure.

Due South was pretty big in the UK for a couple of years. In fact, successful enough that the BBC ended up part-funding it from season 3 onward after whatever US network it was cancelled it.

I was 15/16 when this started airing in the mid-1990s and loved it. Kinda got turned off it a bit from season 3 onward though.

I always liked the episodes with Leslie Nielsen in them. The original series was better for sure. It was never as good when they brought it back with the fake Ray.

I also remember the TV commercials really well for some reason, with all these women swooning when Fraser took off his hat, then saying "Cya Thursday".

I liked the show because it managed to be Canadian as fuck while still being entertaining.

And this right here is why you ended up with the second Ray.

Loved the first two seasons, I still watch them on DVD and I have the theme tune on my Winamp playlist. Never cared much for the oft-mentioned cast change in S3.

Carrot was around for a good 5 years before this show aired, it possibly the other way around or that they are both interesting takes on the same sterotype "boy scout" hero.

    Loved the show anyway.

I loved, LOVED this show back in the day. But like everyone else, hated the 'fake-Ray' eps that completely lacked any chemistry...skipped all those, caught that terrific finale tho.

It was also neat for me trying to spot the places here in Toronto where scenes were filmed...err, I mean "Chicago". And don't forget all the great (usually Canadian) music!

LOL yeeeaah! [off topic: his Cylon had the worst story too, IMO pretty much the root of BSG's piss-poor ending]

Quick trivia: Due South creator Paul Haggis went on to write several Hollywood films including Million Dollar Baby, Crash (which he won the Oscar for), Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace

Hahahaha yeah. I especially liked the ongoing shit about Fraser being unable to lie/steal/etc because he's Canadian (Vechio worked this so well), and how people actually bought that shit.

... and yeah. Thatcher really was a babe. :)

Well, no, it's not like the BBC insisted on a new Ray or anything. The original actor was not available because of the lag-time between season 2 and 3.

I read that he held out for more money or something, but never really followed up on the story since I didn't even watch the show until less than a year ago. Does anyone remember how it ended?

According to Paul Gross himself David Marciano (Ray's actor) just went back to LA and started looking for work in films. And got some, so when the money was scrounged (which took almost a year) he wasn't available.

That makes sense, especially given the gap.
