I've always been a PC gamer, never owned a console - if I'm going to have the processing power of an XBox or PSWhatever, it's going to do more than games. Since my PC is somewhat ancient and I don't do MMOs, I've been thinking about giving the other side of the market a whirl with a handheld.

Got a bead on a good deal for a used DS Light and a couple games - both versions of WfC (especially after reading a couple threads in the TF video games section), and I have my eye on Tron Evolution as well. Any other recommendations or things to look out for?

You gotta get a Pokemon game dude. It's an unspoken rule for having a Nintendo Hand Held Platform.

Try tracking down a Phoenix Wright game if you can. The first game isn't too hard to find, but the sequels can get crazy expensive. I haven't located any of the sequels myself, but I can vouch that the first game is fantastic.

All of the Castlevania games are great. Can't go wrong with Kirby games.

Mario & Luigi series, New Super Mario Brothers, Mario Kart DS, the Dragon Quest games, Final Fantasy III and IV, etc. The DS has a huge, rich library to choose from.

Any genres in particular you're interested in? The DS has a lot to choose from.

All of the Castlevania games are good.
Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush adventure are also great games.
Zelda: Spirit Tracks is great, but Phantom Hourglass is skippable.
    Tetris DS is a must.
The Professor Layton games are excellent brain teasers with compelling storylines.
If you enjoy rhythm games, Elite Beat Agents is awesome.
Also give a try to Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Kart is always worth playing.
I personally also enjoyed the Megaman Star Force series.
The Megaman Zero collection is a must. They're hard but rewarding, and probably the most amazing storyline in a Megaman series.
By extension Megaman ZX and ZX: Advent are also fun to play. The story isn't as deep or dark as the Zero series, but they are fun to play and the transformation gimmick helps shake up a lot of the gameplay elements.

If you get the original DS or the DS lite also check out the massive library of GBA games. I'd recommend both Metroid games, Zelda: Link to the past, and Zelda: Minish Cap.

If you pick up the DSi then check out some of the DSiware games. Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ is fun as Hell, and Mighty Flip Champs is one of the most innovative games I've played in a long time.

I second this notion. Justice for All is one of the better story-driven games out there.

    -Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver
-any Professor Layton game (I prefer The Last Specter)
-the Transformers games from the first movie have surprisingly fun gameplay
    -Mario Kart
    -Custom Robo Arena
    -Metroid Prime Hunters
-If you want a game that makes good use of the stylus, I'd definitely recommend Guitar Hero (make sure you get the peripheral too). Great songs and fun gameplay.
