Whole bunch of reports in on DS Lite hinges spontaneously cracking up:

    Kotaku
    Joystiq #1
Joystiq #2 (in which theirs suddenly sports one)
    Max Console forum thread
    DSLCracked -- Submitted Reports

The crack occurs in a specific spot on the left-side hinge. The fact that the crack seems to occur in the same spot on various DSLites would seem to indicate a design defect, but no one knows for certain what the cause is yet.

There's also a report in the MaxConsole thread of Y+B buttons breaking, causing the system to power off.

UK GameSpot forum thread on Button Issue

On the flip side, apparently the touch screen can take a lot of punishment, and still display pictures. Dunno about the touch functionality though ...

    DS Lite "Stress Test"

It should be noted that the guy who did that video also did this to a little kid.

    Fixed.
It is the right, nay, the duty of older brothers to mess with younger brothers. Plus he called him a douchebag.

It could be a design defect or it could be a vocal minority. Plenty of people. I think it's just weaker plastic. I do think there's a way to avoid it though. If someone opens their DS Lite from the right side(as the dominate hand is more likely to open it), the left side is stressed a lot more. Either push on the left hindge while opening it or just easier and possibly safer, open it up from the middle.

It could also be a defective batch in the plastic molding rather than a design flaw. Some of the early Gamecube pads had molding problems that caused the buttons to not behave correctly. The same thing happened to early batches of the PSP (over which Ken Kutaragi exploded in an egotistical rant, when he and others assumed it was due to the design). If you're in too much of a rush to get the product out, these things tend to slip by more often.

My biggest worry with my DSlite is it getting dirty. (everything shows on that white shell)

I'd assume if you've got a crack you can always get it replaced by your waranty, much like the dead pixels on the first DS.

Nope. All the reports I've seen on the crack have been saying that Nintendo is refusing to cover this under the warranty and is charging people $50 to repair it.

I'll wait for black. Hopefully that molding is a little more sturdy.

Mine cracked and I'm not handling it rough, nor do any of the people I've talked to in RL or online with the problem. After Nintendo refused to fix the problem, most of my friends here in town took them back to Wal-mart to exchange them. But there's no way to insure that whatever brittle plastic Nintendo uses won't break again on the new ones. So much for Nintendo's reputation for sturdy products and great customer service.

This might go toward why Nintendo doesn't want to replace these:
Joystiq has had all of 8 reports of this coming in. The site set up specifically for people to report instances of cracked DS Lites has about 45 responses. Conisdering the millions of DS Lites being sold, this doesn't sound all that widespread so far.

yeah, I have dropped mine and nothing has happened. I think that also, some people might be opening them to far and causing a crack. Its supposed to be at an angle. But in all honesty, we dont know the circumstances of the cracks.

Nothing so far wrong with mine. I keep seeing pictures with the DS opened all the way out, almost flat. Why would folks do that?

Considering how wild people have gone for the DS (I sure as hell didn't expect it) and how quickly they've had to pump them out, I still say Nintendo makes a pretty reliable product.

    Brain Age.

Also, the old DS can open "flat" (180 degrees, offset by height) without problems.

Are the old DS's invincible or something? Cause that's the case with my friend's one. Thing's received so many blows yet it only has a few small dents and scratches.

Btw, are the Nintendogs DS Lites plastic too. I'm thinking of buying one, but this issue of cracking is a bit of a turnoff :(
