Nice find! New to me. Interesting that they consistently refer to Driller as if it's an actual character and not an animal. Maybe Driller's just a really, really weird looking Decepticon?
Nice find! For some reason I just so hard at "Animating tentacles is difficult. And Driller is basically a giant tentacle with tentacles coming off of him."
Animaters: "Whoo! We just got done with Devastator, which was MASSIVE! We think Michael's done with something that big" Michael Bay three rooms down doing push-ups: " I GOT IT! I WANT A GIANT WORM WITH TENTICALS JUST RIPPING THE !@#$ OUT OF A %^&*ING BUILDING!! YES!!"
I was thinking that too, at first. It was newer than the Sentinel video from the same site, though. So I figured I might as well post it.
this puts a whole new perspective on the amount of work that the animators put into developing the models of these characters. i'm truly impressed with what was done after seeing this.
I wonder if one of the animators looked at that art and asked Bay, "How important is he to the plot?"
It's actually ILM (Industrial Light & Magic), who are a division of Lucasfilms. So it's not the main studio, but a branch off of it.
Why would they? Also if you're gonna pull that card none of the Autobots are essential to the plot. Nor are half the uniquely-designed and interesting Decepticons seen roaming Chicago. If you're going to make a Transformers movie at least put as many Transformers in as you can.
It never ceases to amaze me how much effort is put into creating these Bots, Cons, and creatures. I'm a fan of all three films, and seeing the behind-the-scenes sides of these works is always a treat for me. And WHOA, did one of those guys say the Driller is around three football fields (~900 feet) long??? So it was probably, what, around seven or eight times as large as Devastator in size??? O_O
I sure enough did catch that. Makes you wonder if he was to bave been in one of the sequences that way. I have been waiting for this release. Has there been any word about the commentary though?
Right. They said Lucasfilm in the vid, so that's what I said. But either way, it's still amusing that ILM, specifically, who are a division of Lucasfilms, had to upgrade their computers.
Awesome video once again - IF there was a sequel, what would become even more difficult to animate than Driller, perhaps?
