I'm not sure how often I'll be adding to this thread, but every now and then I get the urge to make some comics other than the funnies, and to experiment with the visual style of a photocomic. So here's entry #1, based off a short story I wrote for the montly contest on the IDW fan art forum.

To really understand what's going on here, you probably have to have read All Hail Megatron #15 and possibly Spotlight Kup as well.

Whoa! You used the original toys to make this? That's astounding.

Thanks. I had to use the originals for Kup and Perceptor, and I figured I'd go ahead and use G1 Prowl as well just to be consistent.

Well done as always Shane. The filter style you used in this comic was something I tried to use in that Post Beast Machines comic I made a while back. I didn't think I was completely successful in that attempt and put other attempts on hold. However seeing this reignited my desire do attempt to make a photo-comic that in some way resembles a drawn comic. Did you use some kind of Photoshop filter in this comic? I'd really like to know. Thank you for inspiring me.

I wanted to go with something black and white, so I converted the images to grayscale, then I used the 'stamp' filter under the 'sketch' category. It's still not exactly the look I was going for, but it turned out to be interesting. The color in the eyes and elsewhere served to draw attention to the character's faces, or just to focus the panel and break up the heavy black, and the light blue floor or wall was just to break up the foreground and background.

    Glad you liked it. :thumb

    Not quite right indeed.

Kup's been completely repaired, everything's in prime condition, and, hex, he even gets to smoke his cigar, his guilty pleasure in the time of Megatron's reign.

Yet looks like the mechanics left one screw loose on Kup...

Awesome work Shane! The black and white with colors details reminds me of Sin City. I really enjoy it, makes those highlight pop out!

And this REALLY makes me want a Generations IDW Kup...with Cy-Gar of course!

Excellent debut, Mr. Anderson, sir. :D  Like what Grimlock_13 said, very Sin City-ish. (Reminded me of Jim Lee's Deathblow comics too). Awesome.

Nifty visuals, Shane. I'm not completely familiar with the relevant IDW comics, but I know the general storylines...Kup must be thinking "If that squeak came back, what else might?"

    Not a comforting thought!

    Cy-gar of course! :lol

Maybe I had Sin City in the back of my mind somewhere. I've read an issue or two years ago, and I thought the black and white art made a very striking series of visuals. I don't care for Frank Miller's excesses, but the art was certainly good.

When the majority of the image is black and white, color can be used to direct the eye to certain emphasis points. I was going for that, and also just trying to push the visuals of a photocomic further away from just posed pictures of the toys. Particularly since the G1 figures don't lend themselves to much in the way of poses. :)

One of the things I was going for, which comes across better in the prose version, is that Kup is subconciously aware that he's not quite as he should be. In AHM #15, Prowl has Perceptor secretly install a subroutine in Kup's core processor that will allow Prowl to influence him as a way to influence the Autobots as a whole more effectively. The glance between the two of them in one of the panels is intentional, reflecting the unspoken knowledge of what they've done to Kup.

Prowl has, in a very real way, made Kup open to suggestion.

Kup doesn't know this, but I was trying to suggest that he's subconciously aware of something, even if he can't put his finger on it. Hence his suspicion of Prowl and dismissal of those feelings. So when he says "something's not quite right" at the end, it's not just his finger he's talking about, even if he doesn't know that.

Man, IDW Prowl is a jerk. :D  I need to get into their comics more...they sound like a good time! I did pick up Ongoing number 5, liked it pretty well.
