Not Sure What You Are Talking About, But Box Photos Often Differ From The Actual Product. In Nearly Every Case. Actually.

Maybe the lighting used to take the picture made the gray appear lighter?

They have a "paint and colors may vary" or something like that on the box.

I think anybody who actually owns 6000 transformers would probably already know the answer.

I'd be curious to know how many Transformers have been released total, across all lines. Wasn't there something like 500 released during the 8 years of G1? Have there really been 5,500 more in the 20 years since?

Once again, there's not an easy answer to that because you'd have to specify your definitions.

Do you count redecos who are sold as different characters?
Do you count retools who are sold as different characters?
Do you count redecos who are sold as the same characters?
Do you count retools who are sold as the same characters?
How about multi-packs? Do you count each figure individually? What if the figures are identical to their single releases?
Do you count smaller "partner" figures such as Mini-Cons individually?
Do you count Hasbro and Takara versions of a toy separately? Only when it's sold as a different character? Only when the deco is different?
Do you count G1 reissues and re-releases such as Alternators Prowl, Meister and Tracks in the "bubble" packaging separately? How about European-only packaging variants such as the Universe Micromasters in "Energon" or "Cybertron" packaging?
Do you count toys that don't transform? How about Robot Heroes, the Cyber Stompin' things, Stealth Force, R.P.M./Speed Stars and all these other merchandise things?

These are not pedantic trivialities either. Depending on how you answer these questions, the total number of released toys could easily multiply.

Yeah, and I was trying to calculate G1 including repaints...

Lets say, for the first rule, counting one use of the mold (without significant alterations) as one character being a single toy. So, as an example, for First Edition Voyager Bulkhead, both Hasbro and Takara releases are a single toy. But maybe Arms Micron Bumblebee missing his Hasbro weapons but with a new Micron and covered in ugly ports is a separate toy to Hasbro PRiD Bumblebee.

    And as a second rule,
ignoring all packaging variations. Only the toy itself matters for the purposes of this counting.

As for the rest of the rules:
    - Do you count redecos who are sold as different characters? Yes

    - Do you count retools who are sold as different characters? Yes

    - Do you count redecos who are sold as the same characters? No.

    - Do you count retools who are sold as the same characters? Yes. If they are significant retools.

    - How about multi-packs? Do you count each figure individually? What if the figures are identical to their single releases? No. And no. Same toy.

    - Do you count smaller "partner" figures such as Mini-Cons individually? Ooof. That's a tough one. Let's say no, because I don't want to start counting Headmasters as separate toys. We'll say partners are an accessory of the larger toy.

    - On the other hand, any Minicon that was sold on it's own (or in a three-pack with other Minicons) does count.

Are Alternators Optimus Prime, Kiss Players Convoy and Binaltech Convoy all the same toy?

Or hey, how about Alternators Windcharger and Binaltech Overdrive? More or less the same toy (minus the gun barrel, the slightly retooled visor, diecast vs. plastic, steering wheel on different sides and some minor paint differences), but marketed as a different character.

Even better: RID Spychanger Ironhide (KB Toys exclusive clear redeco) and Universe Dollar Stores exclusive Spychanger Host. Same toy, different character! Same for RID Spychanger W.A.R.S. (KB Toys exclusive clear redeco) and Universe Dollar Stores exclusive Spychanger Camshaft. How do you count them?

The fun continues: Dirt Rocket from the Classics Dirt Digger Mini-Con Team and Thunderwing from the Clear Skies Team vs. "Offshoot" and "Nightscream" from the Walmart exclusive Cybertron Primus with bonus Mini-Cons. Same toys, different characters. How do you count?

So you consider this to be the same toy as this?

What are "significant retools"? Battlefield Bumblebee has a new head sculpt compared to Cannon Bumblebee. Cannon Bumblebee itself is a retool of ROTF "Preview" Bumbleee (well, actually it's an antirely new sculpt aside from the recycled legs). ROTF Preview Bumblebee, in turn, is a retool of Movie Concept Camaro Bumblebee featuring a new cannon arm, a new head sculpt and a new front end for the vehicle mode. How many different toys are these in your count?

So the Energon combiners are five toys per team, but Classics Devastator, Universe/ROTF Superion and Universe/ROTF Bruticus are only one toy each? And how about Energon Bonecrusher and Classics Bonecrusher, do you consider them the same toy or different despite having the same name?

So how do the Master Warriors figure into this?

So Armada Ransack counts as an individual toy, while his redeco Cliffjumper is only an "accessory" to Armada Cheetor? And I thought you said you don't count toys from multi-packs individually.

See how complicated this all gets?

This is the same way government never accomplishes anything. Asking endless questions and forming endless committees instead of just getting down to the job.

Yes, let's consider Binaltech/KP and Alternators the same toy despite the different materials used.

After that, I don't care. If a count exists for either direction, let's hear it. If anyone ever has made any count, post it up along with the criteria they used, and then I can make rough adjustments for myself based on my own preferences.

If no one has ever counted, forget it.

Unlike Nevermore, I'll make it easy for you. Shmax.com: Home has a pretty extensive listing of transformers, so you can go to your hearts content and sort through it there and find out just how many there are in your opinion.
