Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the guaranteed winner. Critics were declaring it the Oscar winner for VFX ever since the first trailer. Don't be surprised if DotM isn't even nominated; Harry Potter, Super 8, Hugo, and the Tree of Life will most likely fill the remaining slots.

Good to see it made the short list, anyway; at least it gets some credit.

In consideration =/= nominated. This is an earlier step. Only about three movies will actually have the honor of a nomination.

I bet DotM will be one of them, though.

EDIT: Oh, wow, three threads about this. Oops.

The Oscars don't mean shit. Even if they don't win, Paramount and Michael Bay will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Planet of the Apes has a great shot. It was a movie people had low expectations for, that by all rights was expected to not be very good, and blew me away.

And a lot of that was due to the outstanding work of Andy Serkis and the visual effects team in selling Caesar. If Caesar hadn't been sold to the audience, the movie falls apart.

I'd vote for Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Andy Serkis + WETA = Win

ill be happy if it makes it into the actual show. but im not holding my breath for them to win. Hollywood is a popularity contest, and they do not care about huge blockbusting fan based films like dark of the moon. all they care about is talking polar bears and smurfs on steroids.

Whether or not the Academy and its voters like the movie itself, I don't see how they can't admire the technical achievement of the visual (AND sound) effects of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. You can fucking hate the story, the acting, even the direction, but the special effects are incredible and have been for 3 movies in a row now.

The expertise it takes to animate a vehicle and transform it into a living robot IS an achievement. And I believe worth rewarding.

I would say give the series its due, but the Oscars are pretty much made for old people who like old-fashioned things. It's no wonder the younger generation isn't paying attention anymore to the Oscars. The problem is that at this rate, the Academy may very well one day make their own awards irrelevant.

I saw both Rise of the planet of the apes and Dark of the Moon and they are both amazing films, though they both have stunning VFX my vote would have to go to dotm. I will seriously scream my head off with rage if it dosent win next year. I kinda find the oscars unfair especially when then gave the golden compass the award instead of TF1, I don't know what was going thorough their heads when they did that.

Transforming robots with over 10,000 individual pices > monkeys.
