    hey guys!

It seems Ironhide is the flavor of the month so I'll toss mine into the fray as well! Started working on the physical build last night and made a fair bit of progress.

    Work done:

Articulated hands (Thanks for the tip Godzebu!)
Added a magnet to the left arm roof flap for no floppiness
Battle mask is removable via another small magnet
    Double ball jointed neck
ALL arm kibble has bee modded onto the canopy for a no-partsform kibble free arms

Still to do on the physical build:

Replace right arm "movie accurate" cannon with a suitable new weapon
Create in scale arm cannons for both arms

Godzebu had mentioned the idea of adding waist articulation, and I think I see how I would go about it. I'm not sure if I'll tackle that job or not though.

After the build I will start on the electronics!

Here's some pics and narration, Enjoy!

Arms look much better without all that junk!

    Battlemask "deployed"!

Even though the new backpack is larger, it actually looks better to me:

Here's kind of an exploded view of the kibble mod, might be helpful. basically I sawed off the arm flaps at the black tab that pins them into the arms. From there i simply rotate the tab so the fresh cut was facing the windows and then epoxied them onto the windows. Easy as pie!

Ironhide can look in all directions now, even upwards!

Hey welcome to the 'club ' .
IH looks great. YOU SEE what I mean by waist articulation delimma I was talking about?
Yeah we could do it but the question is will that open another 'can of warms'?
I haven't started on physical mod for my mk III build (Just a whole lot of bench tests),
but it is going to be ......dare I say "perfect grade IH?"
oh btw, are u going to do the feet mod by chance? If u do can u show how to remove the truck bit from his feet? I just can't figure out how to get this summama bitch off...

Haha, thanks! Membership has his privileges.

I wonder how beneficial a waist would be anyway given his stout stature. I wouldn't do it just to say I did it, if you know what I mean.

I'm not even sure what foot mod you are referring to but I was contemplating adding some toes. Or at least separating the ones he has. All the CG images of him he has really long splayed apart toes/feet.

I did casually glance at his feet as I was thinking of casting the back section to light up the tail lights, but I haven't studied him enough yet to know the best, easiest way to disassemble them.

I can say I really want to see some Mk. III action!:thumbs2:

Your hinges assemblies linking the arm kibble to the backpack is way cleaner than mine. You make me want to do a second Leader Ironhide (well, I still have to finish painting on my first :p ).

I love the hands too, really cool mods. :)

Yeah My LC IH ear marked for MK III is still in package.
I agree with you about the waist articulation. I want to make sure that MK III can be played with just like the stock figure. I tore apart two "Perfect Grade Gundam models" (well not "tore apart", but took it apart to get some idea) for bench test to see if I can use their design for stable waist articulation for MK III.

The foot mod I'm talking about (I think I let the cat outta bag by mentioning the foot mod), is actually the one I'll do. I accidentally mentioned it assuming that you are also going to do one as well. But yeah, just like you said, some "toe" like structers (which will be folded and tucked in while truck mode) will be very likely on MK III. I was just wondering if you have already figured out how to take the truck bit off of his feet because it is on there pretty good and taking one screw out at the heel doesn't really do anything.

If you figure it out, please post some photos here or send me via PM.

    Thanks bud!

this is very cool Big Hank! In fact, I think this is the best solution for Ironhides arm kibble yet. I don't like the looks of the backpack quite as much as the V configuration you can do with magnets, but for the trade off of getting rid of the gray bracket on the arms and the gap between window & door in alt mode, it seems worth it! plus I know you're just getting warmed up!

Yeah, this has me contemplating the mod. I think I'll stick with the magnets, though...

    Great work as always, hank!

Alrighty! A long overdue update on Ironhide!

I started the foot mods to give him better toes. I could have finished both sides but I decided to leave one stock for comparison and also to give a mini tutorial on disassembling the feet (will add in a following post)

So here ya go! Toes! Does not affect transformation but I still have to notch out a little bit of the leg panel for it to tuck away in truck mode.

    Pics and narration:

Here we see Ironhide gives the thumbs up regarding his new shit kickers!

    A close up:

Side by side comparo with factory "now lame" feet:

    Toes folded preparing for transformation:

    Fourth toe folded:

Fourth toe was made form an upper segment of movie Scorponok's leg and a random poly cap from a Gundam:

Here you can see the new toes fit just like factory stock toes for truck mode:

This is the way the fourth toe will store after I notch out that black panel to accept it:

Also I made some "locks" out of brass stock to keep the front fenders/shoulder armor from falling off. You can now lift Ironhide by his armor and shake him and he stays together!:

Okay gang! Foot disassembly tutorial coming up!

Leader Class Ironhide Foot Removal Tutorial:

Here are the tools I used:

    • Needlenose pliers
    • Phillips screwdriver
    • Automatic center punch

Step 1: Use the center punch to push the pin holding the toes on. Push from the outside inward as the knurled end of the pin is on the inside end of the hinge. After enough of the pin is exposed, use the pliers to pull it out the rest of the way. I did not need to heat the pin with a soldering iron, it cooperated very nicely.

Step 2: Take your screwdriver and remove the screw behind the ankle.

Step 3: Inside this hole is the final screw, just feel it out and unscrew it.

Step 4: Pull the tailgate section off first to start the disassembly.

Step 5: Now you can remove the foot entirely from the ankle joint and pull apart the last two pieces. Here is all the components of the foot.

    Now get to it!!

    This guys coming along great!

Really curious how you made that shoulder lock, I need to do something similiar for my Megatron reshell of Ironhide, the truck panels sit as far out as the ball joint will let them in truck mode, but are flimsy.Basically theres no friction to keep them in place.

I'm not at the shop to show the tools I used for the shoulder locks, but I will be doing a little demo video of the feet and a demo of the shoulder locks so I will explain it then as thoroughly as I can, and provide example links to the tools at the very least. It wasn't very hard, less than an hour total for fabrication and installation.
