Hello everyone, Since Studio series Jazz and bee are fully done, I focused my attention to one of the cars in my junkerbox.. DOTM Voyager Ironhide! I know he is to slim as a robot and he has some flaws but I am a fan of robots IN disguise, not mostly hidden with its feet sticking out. So eventrough we get a new Ironhide from the Studio Series, I decided to get him in order.. His scale is spot on when put next to SS Bee and Jazz, 1:39 scale as well! here is the "gang" together And here are some pictures of what I did to start him off: The things I want to do to him are: (as seen in the pictures) I removed the Mweh-tech holes from his body and cleaned up some other holes as well I will find a way to "bulk up" his legs in robotmode so he is a bit more bulky and Ironhidy chest mod to make it all fit together better Find him some proper cannons to show off Give him an all new paintjob in gloss black, Add the chrome to the stacks and grille Give him some gloss clearcoats, and then I will spend some days detailing and repainting him in gunmetal, gold, black and semigloss black (tires and such) And after that give him a polish and a waxing to shine even more. After that, i might go and look into Ratchet..
A quick look at Ironhide and I can see that he does not really need to be shortened but he needs to be bulked up especially in the leg part above the feet Bananagreen did a repaint of him that actually shows what he is missing: Minor/Repaint: - DOTM ironhide voyager class Bananagreen's tread) He needs some serious atention to the "gap" under and especially in front of the rotating part that puts his feet up when he is in robotmode. Lucky for Ironhide and us.. that part can be added to without hindering the transformation at all! More on that as soon as I find parts that will do that area justice
That'll look great! I always liked DotM Ironhide but felt like he needed some work! Excited to see this! I have some extra cannons that could work. Pm me if your interested.
Thank you! I might take you up on that.. I do have a big box of spares that I can dip into first, with 3 or 4 Ironhides. So Ill take a look in there first! His buildtread is on this forum to somewhere (Ss Jazz in the paintshop I think) , he was a labour of love.. I clearcoated him so the sheen is amazing to
Today it was the day of sanding, priming, masking and painting.. He is a shiny mother -KLUNK- I started of with sanding down the former mech tech holes as good as I could, it still shows a bit but it does not bug me that much, then I masked the windows, headlights, and rear bumper and primed the figure (only one coat) then it was 3 coats of gloss black followed by 2 coats of clear gloss. and well.. Here are some "in progress pictures" 2nd coat of black: I didn't show primer (also black) and clear cause they don't show much on pictures.. But I guess you guys wonder what he looks like when he is baked ? Here he is and keep in mind that I will polish him once he has his detailing and final clear coat: With the trunk of a junker Ironhide to show the difference in color and shine Next stop will be a way to bulk up his legs, I had a comander sized dino junker that i think would look right once sanded and reshaped a bit, There is room in between his legs in alt mode, so I will use this small piece, it also has 3 points of rotation so I can pose it in robotmode to bulk up his legs.
Thanks Prime326! I added some details to his Topkick mode while I wait for inspiration to strike on the robotmode.. I used Bare metal foil for the chrome bits and painted the fake windows dark blue to match the front windows. Also gave the tires a coat of satin black to look more rubbery and once the windows are dry, Ill get onto the Gmc logo, taillights and front bumper hinch and the front lights assembly. He sure looks good with Bee and jazz!
I am just about done with Ironhide's altmode. His tires were still to shiny so I mixed 50-50 semi gloss and flat black together to get his tires just right, I did the bumperlights and bumper winch in silver (lights with a gloss coat), taillights in deep red, orange and silver, and the sidemarkers in Orange and of course I used Bright red for the gmc logo. I then sealed all that with another gloscoat (will polish him as soon as his robotmode is finished) With the exeption of the upper marking lights, his altmode is done ( I can't seem to find if his upper marking lights are blue or orange, the reference pictures I have show some with blue and some with orange, so ill watch the movies again and get them right) Sorry about Jazz, he was on the Prowl ;-) Next up.. Ironhide's alt mode!
When I took Ironhide back in Altmode, I noticed that when you don't stretch his legs fully, he looks much better! I modded the double joint a bit so it can sink a bit deeper so he kan look a bit more like he should. I might bulk up his calves someday but for now I just wat to started with his paintjob. Here are some pictures while he is being painted: For now I am waiting for the last paint to dry (the gloss black of course) and then Ill clearcoat him and put him back together and then polish and wax him into a pristine shine. So what do you guys think?
Paint has dried.. so It was time to put him together.. I am not a fan of the worn look, so I made Ironhide as new as he could be. He was painted in colors taken from screen stills and pictures and pictures of the Prime1 studio statue Ironhide.. He still needs to be polished and buffed up but he needed to be seen BUT... what is Ironhide without his cannons? I am feelin lucky p.. reader..;-)
BE ADVISED< SOME GUNS WILL BE HACKED UP! So Guns.. I do have a hftd remold of the First Voyager Ironhide and I did like the look of the guns but not their length witch was needed for the mech tech gizmo thingy.. I do not want Gizmo thingies so..... some hacking and cuting later And some paint later..
Amazing work! That voyager is so underrated, glad to see him being done some justice! You've convinced me to dig mine up and try to give him the paint he deserved, wish me luck! BTW, the running lights on the roof are only orange on the "Ironhide" version of the Topkick people could buy and have a 99% accurate replica of the truck. Ironhide himself had the blue lights.
So.. blue it is Today I have been bussy! He was transformed back into altmode polished, Scratches removed and buffed out and then I gave him his blue running lights on top (thank you for that tip, saved me watching the movies again) Also took the time to redo the bare metal on his grille and "carve" out the panel lines that were a bit shallow due to the paint prior to clearcoating him (4 coats were added) I degreased him 2 times and preped him for paint (dust removal) and went at it.. He came out AMAZING! his black is really shiny now as it should be and he is curently in a closed box curing for 1 or two days after witch he will get polished again and get a coat of wax. While he is curing I will not be bored.. I have another project just standing around, but Ratchet will get his own tread...
