WTC was a brazen attack by zealots against Americans and her allies. The Challenger explosion was a tragic mechanical failure, that I think could also could've been an interesting hook. If we don't do things just because it offends people, then I don't think we'd get interesting movies or stories. I'm not saying that the Challenger explosion can be brushed off and it is an unfortunate note in the history of space exploration, but with a theme like Dark of the Moon, I felt it could have been an interesting thing to think about. What if it was an act of sabotage? What if Challenger had another mission that was related to the Ark?

I like the ones that aren't based on horrific real-life trageties, personally.

Mars rover supposedly getting broke by a robot, TFs supposedly being the reason we raced to the moon. I dig it.

However TFs supposedly being the cause of countless deaths in real life. Not so much.

This is a really good idea, who knows this might even be in the film.

just rewatched the quintesson journal at the gym today, where the quints are responsible for giving two alien races weapons so they fight each other (very cold war / mideast), and there's also the ongoing comic now, and how the 'cons have given humans super-powered weapons to take out their fears on the autobots...

combining these ideas with the infiltration comic, I'd say the 'cons use pretenders to infiltrate the world's governments, distribute such powerful weapons to the middle east, causing world governments to get involved, and quickly deplete their resources. then, when humans can't fight back for lack of $$/resources/oil/weapons/you name it, the 'cons attack. without help from the military, and having slipped past their early warning systems, the autobots would be vanquished forever!

Not trying to offend anyone, but IIRC, Godzilla did plow through one in the American Movie where he was in NYC. I could be wrong though and it may have been a different skyscraper.

    I think it's a nice touch.

It's not always easy to get across an idea of robots in disguise when you need robots beating the crap out of each other in really cool looking locations. But by connecting the robots to historical events there is feeling of them being there without the general public knowing about it.

I don't think it has to be just tragic events. A Decepticon stuck in the former Soviet Union might be connected with Sputnik as a way to get a signal out to the other Decepticons which set up why so many seemed close to Earth in the first two films.

    Different skyscraper. :)

Besides, Godzilla trashing a city is one thing, but I guess what I meant was making a movie that says he caused the destruction of the WTC on 9/11 would be taking it a bit far. Hell, the original GOJIRA (1954) was inspired by Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but they would definitely never make the movie say that Godzilla was the cause instead of atom bombs.

I used to when the idea was fairly new, but these days so many films and tv shows and comics and stuff do it that it's kinda ho hum now.
Have the Transformers caused the Roswell Incident yet? That's a pretty common one for these things to do.

The Decepticons are to blame for that movie? I had my suspicions.

Imagine if Lazerbeak caused Chernobyl? That would explain the "black bird" sightings during that catastrophic event.
