Texas city revives paddling as it takes a swat at misbehavior

No. I still have respect for my 1st grade teacher. Heck my parents encourage it.

Funny how this article came out: Spanking May Make a Child More Aggressive - Yahoo! News

I'm not aggressive at all. I think it's like the chicken or egg thing. But I think they get spanked more due to their misbehavior, and more spanking leads to more pain tolerance.

My father told me some absolute horror stories of teachers venting their anger and brutalising children in his day. I had an older teacher who longed to return to those days of punishment. We were terrified of her anyway.

My own feeling is that there are superior non-violent methods of discipline and gaining compliance. I was always far more impressed with the teachers who could shame us into doing the right thing, rather than the disciplinarians that shout and lecture.

A lot of teachers just aren't sophisticated enough to succeed this way, and violence will seem like the easy answer. There's also children from very difficult home situations, and/or with special needs that aren't being adequately addressed. When there's overcrowded classrooms and insufficient resources to deal with these kids, everyone else's education suffers.

I never had any respect for an adult that would use violence against a kid. I've seen a lot of kids go from bad to worse from being beat and abused.

But I never got paddlings myself. I was a good kid.lol

Yeah, but there's a difference between disciplining a kid and abusing them.

I'm glad they're bringing this back. I only had three whippings when I was a kid, and I learned from experience that I didn't want another one.

I don't support or condone the use of paddling as there are better ways of disciplining kids, they may take more effort to get the point across but they work.

I know there's going to be at least some people on both giving and receiving ends who'll derive arousal from this.

Seems about right for the very backward Texas Board of Education.

The paddlin' may sound bad, but if you mention Thomas Jefferson in class, they'll bring out the iron maiden.

Yeah when these little kids are biting/clawing/and scratching my wife on a daily basis, and all she can do is say "Stop!" for fear of being sued by the parents because their child is so innocent. Damn right I'm behind this.

:lol  Texas is sooooo backwards. Also, I cant help but laugh at the similarities with this and the King of the Hill episode with Paddlin Peggy. The first article is also hilarious. It reeks of the "GET OFF MY LAWN YOU KIDS WITH YOUR ROCK AND ROLL AND YOUR SKATEBOARDS" attitude. I think the problem is that these people and parents just dont really know how to discipline people without threatening violence; it can be done, but apparently Texas still wants everyone to laugh at them. If the only reason spitballs are not being thrown at a teacher is because somebody is threatened with the paddle, it is their own fault for continuing a culture that raises horrible children.

I sincerely doubt that your wife is bitten clawed and scratched on a daily basis.

If you remove Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Declaration of Independence and co-framer of the Constitution, from a history book because his personal outlook from 250 years ago doesn't agree with yours, you deserve to be paddled. By Barbara Bush.

I doubt it as well...on a daily basis. But even once is too much to put up with. When I was teaching, I had 2 kids whose parents couldn't get them to behave, and who cared nothing for the standard time-outs/ loss of recess nonsense. A good paddling might've brought them in line. Instead, I had to deal day in and day out with a steady stream of misbehaviors. Take your 'alternative social solutions' and shove 'em- some kids just need a guiding hand...guiding a paddle.

Of course, the two times I was paddled at school, I got his twice as hard at home. You know how often I repeated the offending behavior? None.

I know, right? I mean these are the people who thought "Thomas Jefferson?? Why teach kids about him and the great things he did for America when we can tell them about a REAL american hero, John Calvin." :redface2:  Cause lord knows when we think of important figures in american history we think about a French theologian who lived two hundered years before The War for Independence.:banghead:

    *Sigh* Tl;dr: Fuck Texas.
