Yeah, but if you listen on, it's got the bit that sounds like "dare to believe" and the middle eight with the synth is *identical*.

The intros sound very similar, certainly closer to each other than other "comparible" songs, but beyond that the "Dancouga" song sounds hardly like Dare to me. I have no clue what the japanese song is saying, but it sure sounds less upbeat than Dare's lyrics.

Yeah, and the instrumental in the middle is nearly identical, too. There is no way it was be a coincidence.

That being said, anime in the mid 80's was incredibly rare as an import, and I doubt Vince was privy to any of it.

This is an interesting question. I wonder what the truth is. Though, unlike others, I'm not to going to call something a thief with no knowledge of the situation other than what I have read in this thread.

Wow, that's very interesting! The two are definitely too similar for it to be a coincidence, though I'm not 100% sure what to think of it.

If you took the vocals out of the equation you would almost have 2 identical instrumental versions of the same song.

Like I say, who really cares? Vince DiCola's Dare is one of the greatest songs of all time IMO and even if he did get some *ahem* inspiration from the Japanese track, then what does it matter? It worked out for the best!

It probably went the other way. I don't know how he would have heard that song.

Wow, there are definitely a lot of similarities, and not just the intro either. I don't think it's coincedence at all. Maybe someone who actually cares enough and has the free time can do the research.

Though it's my guess that Dare got knocked off.

It's a shame that his music got nicked for that without being credited, but that's pretty cool. I loved the music on the C64, has a really nice retro sound.

I'm hearing that this song came from an album that was released a few years AFTER the show, and TFTM, rather than from the show itself, which predated the movie.

That's the big question. Some of the soundtrack had been written well before the movie's release as I recall.

If Dancuga came out later, then it's pretty clear they ripped Dare off.

When I looked into it I found something that indicated this song may have been from the last Dancouga OVA which was 89-90. I watched the episode it mentioned though (thanks to it being randomly available on megaupload) and the song was nowhere to be found, so I can't confirm it.

I do lean towards "Dare" being the original though.

Should've kept listening. It even has the instrumental synth break (the part of the movie where Hot Rod slides down the mountain holding Daniel).

The Dangougar theme I believe was a year after but then again creation time is a different issue.

The Turrican theme from C64 came out a few years after TF:TM

I don't think Stan or Vince were big enough nerds back in the day to know what Dancouga was.

Unless Uncle Hasbro was intentionally directing Vince to steal his tunes from Anime while they were stealing their plot from Star Wars and the Silver Surfer....there's no way. Vince is not the sort of chap who would have been importing anime in the mid 80s (nearly impossible to do back then...), and I REALLY don't think he's the kind of guy who would be doing so to rip off theme songs.

MUCH more likely (and as the new evidence begins to suggest) would be that some of the same folks working on TFTM in Japan (It took them a LONG time to get their dub done...) were involved with Dancourga (or friends with someone who was or whatever) and the Japanese songs took liberally from ol' Vince.

Occam's Razor says either pure coincidence or Japanese artists lifting from Vince...

Here's one I never knew until now: "Nothin's Gonna Stand In Our Way" was a cover, and was originally sung by Aussie singer John Farnham for the soundtrack to the film "Savage Streets" in 1984.
