I watched a couple of episodes just to give the show a chance, but I got bored with the "Decepticon of the Week" type thing. So as the season progresses, does it stay with that formula for a good while, or does it deviate around mid-season?

It stays like that basically. But in episode 20
they at least find an ancient Cybertronian ship, although they blow it up at the end.

Careful with spoilers please. :)  Others may check this thread to see whether they should give RID a try and might not appreciate plot points being revealed.

I know it's a really...odd...situation...with how they've aired the episodes this go around. Anything near the end of the season is probably best to avoid revealing atm. Thanks guys!

To the OP- I think it will get better once they introduce longer lasting arcs, which they seem to be doing. TFA took a bit to do this as well so no cause for concern yet imo

Well, I feel the show has been improving but it never breaks from the formula. There's new Autobots, Decepticons reappearing and IMO, better action. However, the show is still about a new 'Con each week, with little in terms of an ongoing plot.

It's also noteworthy that Out of Focus does show us Optimus
training with one of the Thirteen
, Sideways sees the current lead villain
    complete his team
and the last couple of episodes are apparently bringing in Optimus and a new big villain.

    Something to remember:
Beast Wars was solid, but fairly formulaic until its second season (which is when everyone tends to agree the series got good and is a large reason the show is so well remember today)

The first 13 episodes (first season) of Transformers Animated had almost no major Decepticon action until the end of the season, upon which the show largely shifts to a more "traditional" Autobot vs Decepticon conflict.

Transformers Prime's first 26 episode season was largely treading water until the season finale, and the show seemed to take a noticable uptick in season 2.

Long and short, going by prior Transformers series, RiD will probably get better, but it may well take until season 2 to do so.

After having watched the first dozen episodes that have aired, I too am not a huge fan of the Decepticon-of-the-week formula (which is what the first 12 episodes have been). I am going to stick with the show though. Prime was one of my favorite cartoons of all time, and I think I'm only sticking with the show because of the show's connection to Prime.

it will get more interesting when season 2 airs because it will show Team Prime returning and also possibly the Decepticons from Transformers Prime

The opening two-parter was really bad in terms of pacing and resolution. In fact it was pretty bad altogether. The individual episodes are much better, but still aren't as good as say Animated or Beast Wars. Still, they tend not to be all that bad themselves but if a new Decepticon each week isn't your thing then you probably won't be into it.

Long story short yes. The show has become what Animated never could be... fun and awesome. The con of the week thing can be a bit weary at some points but at least they're usually entertaining and have some awesome designs. And with the future arrival of a certain character it's just going to get even better from there.

    Fixed that for you :p

Animated, I would agree with. But Beast Wars?

I'm sorry, but there's a LOT of the love for Beast Wars seems to come from the payoff and change up that occurred AFTER the first 26 episodes. The first season of Beast Wars was no less formulaic with a majority of plots about some Predacon scheme against the Maximals, with the occassional Stasis Pod episode with a handful of alien device episodes (less than a dozen, probably on par with the number of episodes/references RiD is giving to the 13 Prime arc in RiD).
And that doesn't even address Prime which did a lot of the same but without HALF the personality.

I still think it is too early to completely write off Robots in Disguise as many of the referenced series (Prime and Beast Wars in particular), themselves didn't really start to pick up momentum until their second seasons anyway.
Most of us haven't even seen the end of the FIRST of RiD, yet!

I've only watched 2 full eps, and even missed the premiere.

I haven't latched onto it at all. Maybe later.

I'm sure it'll get better. Most shows do. First season usually gets setting, character traits and tendencies, world building, and wacky adventures out of the way first.

I'm sure the creators had to choose between:
    -Decepticon of the Week
    -Relic of the Week
    -Plot of the Week
    -Filler of the Week

    Which would you have chosen?

I would say without a doubt it is getting better. It is not dropping the monster of the week theme particularly quickly, but very interesting continuous plotlines are piling up, and many Decepticons are returning, along with the occasional Autobot.

    The plot with
    Optimus
is very, very interesting. A neat first look at
who and what the Primes actually are in the present.

The show is indeed getting better. The action has improved a lot in the latest batch of episodes.

To answer your question, yes it certainly gets better late to mid-season.

This is so true. Animated was terrible. A great voice cast, but a horrible story, And horrible designs ruined it for me.

Well, at least we agree on one thing.

I don't think this shows going to get better, formua-fueled shows never do well in the long term.
