(Thread title is just fun, not intended to convey any real nerd rage)

Something I've noticed since I was a kid:

Transformers Energon: We get a very obvious Ironhide/Ratchet homage that is instead painted into a Skids clone named "Tow Line" for mass release.

Alternators: We get a toy that any G1 fan would look at the prototype of and think, "That's Ironhide!", and they paint it blue and name it Skids.

Now Transformers Prime: We get a mold that is 100% undeniably Ironhide (because it was based on concept drawings from the show) and they paint it green and release it to us stateside as Sgt. Kup.

It's hard to be an Ironhide fanboy, friends.

Anyone else seeing a pattern here?

I just want to add that the Universe Ratchet toy, which uses the X-Brawn mold, and ignoring the Emergency decals/paint looks more like Ironhide then Ratchet.

Its easy to see one, but not really...

Energon: This was during an era when Hasbro really wasn't concerned with the legacy of their characters outside of a really, really small subset. See Armada Smokescreen, Armada Wheeljack, Energon Downshift. Etc. Etc.

Alternators: Similar deal. Alternators was *rife* with character names and appearances being changed and switched around until just before release. I think Prowl, Wheeljack, Grimlock, Windcharger, Decepticharge, Dead End, and Swindle all began the design process as somebody else entirely.

Prime: I'll give you. The line has been handled very, very strangely. We know frighteningly little about Hasbro's plans for the line in 2013 and there's only a few more figures left on the docket for the remainder of the year -- most of them, Voyagers. We've heard mention that Hasbro wanted to avoid confusing customers with new Ironhide toys when the character died in the previous film. But clearly Prime is an entirely different product line and fiction, plus... why release the Cyberverse figure, then? Especially when it is clearly the same design as the figure they're now choosing to only (until we hear different) release as Kup.

Having seen reviews of deluxe Sergeant Kup, perhaps seeing the final figure and realizing the weaknesses in its conversion, they didn't want to attach a "top-tier" character to the mold? Or maybe after the figure was already in production they suddenly decided that Ironhide should always be a larger character? Without more information, its impossible to say.

What I will say, the Hasbro of 2004-2006 and their treatment of the Transformers brand versus 2012 is night and day and ultimately, a pretty unfair comparison. I feel pretty confident that there's no actual Ironhide hate on Hasbro's part, given he was a key figure in all three live-action films and had dozens of figures made, including a leader-class for Dark of the Moon. If anything, Hasbro probably loves Ironhide a whooooole bunch. But the brand is in a really weird spot right now. There's no live-action movie to drum up promotion for, which hasn't been the case since... 2005? 2006? Plus add in all the arguments about the cost of toy production and the condition of the US economy you've undoubtedly heard dozens of times by now, etc. etc.

I dunno, I think at this point, the characters that were the most visible throughout the live-action films: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Ironhide, Ratchet... they'd want to make sure were always at the forefront of the buying public's consciousness. For a figure whose design was very clearly intended to be Ironhide to turn around and be released as Kup? Y'gotta think *something* about that figure, they felt, wasn't properly representative of how they want Ironhide to be portrayed going forward.

Who cares? I just got my PP05 Weapons and Medical Specialists. I'm getting rid of Hasbro's crappy little Ironhide.

That's cool for you, but I like Ironhide, not PP05 Weapons Specialist.

It's like this: The reason that we aren't getting a Deluxe Prime Ironhide is because their main age demographic is the 5 to 13 year old's. They grew up with the Movie-verse version of Ironhide, so when he died in DOTM, Hasbro assumed that the previously mentioned age demographic would forget about him since once a TF dies, fans tend to forget about him/her. As for the generations before that, Ironhide did not have a distinct personality. He was one of the more normal TF's who was caught up in the war & wanted to beat the crap out of the Decepticons. About 3 other Transformers in G1 had almost that exact personality. I'm not saying he was generic at all. How he looked, how he talked, & how he was set up as a character were all recognizable. What his actual personality turned out to be was very generic.

Just be glad Ironhide got some kind of mass release update.

I'd kiss a hippo's back end for a mass release transforming update of BW Rattrap or Tarantulas.

"Windcharger" was released as "Overdrive" in Japan, and his head is clearly based on G1 Omnibot Overdrive. The only reason Hasbro released him as "Windcharger" is because they couldn't get the trademark for "Overdrive".

Dead End and Swindle were designed as Sunstreaker and Trailbreaker, respectively. We not only assume this because of their heads, we know for a fact who their heads were meant to be because those names are written next to the control drawings in English in the Japanese Binaltech guide book.

Likewise, "Decepticharge" uses a head originally intended for Windcharger (the actual G1 guy, not Overdrive with a different name), but on a Ford Mustang body (presumably the Grimlock redeco/retool which later ended up as Wheeljack).

Prowl was originally intended as Red Alert. We saw control drawings with a different head.

Also, "Side Swipe" was originally going to be Tracks with a slightly different transformation (that was when General Motors wouldn't grant Hasbro and Takara the license for the Corvette), and the Prowl redeco ("Camshaft") was originally intended as "Bluestreak".

At least Ironhide gets more toy releases than some other characters. Still waiting on that Generations Blitzwing since the character hasn't been seen since Transformers Animated.

Good info, didn't even know this. I've wanted to get the Japanese Binaltech guide, but it's so damn expensive!

Meh. Energon already had a character named Ironhide, and Skids needs the love. Besides, there's the BotCon redecoes.

Don't see how the Binaltech Scion xB screams Ironhide. I'd think a fuel-efficient, economic city-stroller fits Skids to a T. Would've been slightly better as the xA though.

They don't hate Ironhide. They probably just prefer the serious Michael Bay iteration with the gatling guns over the cartoon version that is perceived as being sillier.

Lol only one loser with that attitude. Fans of Transformers finally have an Ironhide to display proudly and enjoy something that fans of Hasbro maybe waiting a long time for.

I'd hardly call him a loser. Not everyone would like to spend over $100 for an unofficial toy like that.

    :wtf:

How did you read that I'm calling him a loser? Read it again please before accusing me of that. My post refers to there only be one loser with an attitude of not buying a fantastic figure because it isn't made by Hasbro/Takara, e.g he is missing/losing out as HasTak aren't gonna reward his loyalty by 'sticking' it to the third parties. Not a loser in the sense you are obviously thinking :peoples:

... I thought you were calling him a loser also.

Love my Henkei Ironhide though. Wouldn't give that up for anything.

Um. Ironhide got a lot of Movie toys. Movie Ironhide was pretty awesome.

Multiple voyager molds includeing massive weapon and arbitrary Head retools, A legends mold, a cyberverse commander, A gimmick focused leader toy that is fun ; if compartment play weapons is what you dig in larger pricepoint Transformers, though the deluxe is probably my favorite Movie Ironhide for the leg articulation and the drone deployer.

Trailbreaker fans have been there though. he almost got an Alternator, and for years the only modern toy he had was a spychanger paint scheme on a Ironhide.

Hasbro is doing fine Though. That Ironhide had a toy this year probably means their going to keep pushing for him in whatever multimedia the brand generates.

    Exile from Cybertron the Game?
