Mostly I just put on the alarm on the tv so it goes off at a certain time so I can fall a seep to that

I have a sleep music mix. Bunch of random stuff. When I finally get everything in my house unpacked and put away I will put a tv in the room with a dvd player so the wife and I can watch movies while I fall asleep. Usually takes about ten minutes. :p

No way. I like it as quiet as possible and as dark as possible.

My roommate likes to keep his laptop running and the fan kicks on and cycles every 20 seconds or so. It drives me nuts. I have to keep the A/C on to drown out the noise.

Yeah, I used to do that when I was 14. Only, I used a big, bulky yellow Sony sports Walkman :D

    This.

I can't seem to stop myself from actively listening to it, and I just end up laying there wide awake as a result. It's probably the only time of day that I don't listen to music.

I used to listen to music when I go to sleep while growing up. Last time I ever did, it was probably in my late high school years into the first year or so of me being in college. I tend to listen to whatever I felt would get me to sleep, usually soundtracks.

I really don't put music on when I go to sleep, I put loads of audiobooks on, with a bit of classical music to mix things up.

Yeah. 80s hits on the radio all night, but it's really quiet and in the background just to keep my ears from ringing.

I did for years and years with a Walkman and then a Discman. I had finally weaned myself off doing so, but fell back into it when I got an iPod. It's gotta be something I know backwards and forwards, be it Ministry or Depeche Mode; if it's a new album, I'll actively try to listen rather than drift off.

Typically I set my itunes to shuffle and just lay in bed listening for a while and then drift off to sleep. I can fall asleep to anything may it be Cannibal Corpse or Johnny Cash I'll sleep if I want to.

I prefer white noise as opposed to music or absolute silence. The hum of an air conditioner or patter of rain on the roof/windows are fantastic.

I've been looking for mp3s of rainfall to pipe through my surround sound, but so far I haven't found any tracks that sound even close to natural rainfall.

That's me too. I have a fan going in my room every night all-year 'round, even in Winter. Without it running I find it very difficult to drop off. That said, I always wake a few hours later and can't get comfortable or back to sleep and that's when I resort to music to try and chill my brain. Usually it's the score to a film or something classical. If I wake with a headache I'll blast it out with something metal or rocky.

I love me some rain too. When I used to go on holiday and stay in caravans a storm was pure metal roof tippy-tappy heaven. That primal sound connects with me. Gets my girlfriend going too. :)  I've got some CDs of thunderstorms, crashing waves and running rivers but it's just not the same as the real thing.
