With the holidays approaching, I was wondering what people feel about giving and receiving used gifts. Sometimes people want to buy things for someone that are just too expensive to buy normally, so they will give used items so that they can gift bigger/better/more expensive items. Things to think about are refurbished, reconditioned, used but in the original box, a great deal on something used but in good shape. Things I have in mind are electronics, video games, appliances. I am not including things like collectables or clothes.

So, what thoughts do people have as the giver and receiver of used gifts?

I wouldn't have a problem as long as the item is in fairly good condition and works.

I've been known to regift here and there.

As long as the product is still new (and barring no sentimental value) I don't see what the big problem is.

I don't mind getting used stuff but I would feel guilty giving something used unless I know for certain the receiver doesn't mind.

So long as the gift is still in good condition and all. Kinda pointless to give junk.

Besides, it's supposed to be the thought that counts.

I don't see anything wrong with it but I know some people are fussy, but as long as it works and its not too rough I don't see why not, got my brother a used PS2 for christmas a couple of years back and he was thrilled, not bothered that it wasn't new.

Last year I gave my sister a used (but in original box) Nintendo Gamecube, with a couple used controllers and a few games (Smash Bros, and a couple Sonic Games). Everything was in great shape except for the gamecube's box. She loved the gift and new had I bought the system new (2 of the 3 games were new by the way), I couldn't have afforded it otherwise.

My father loves used gifts, so long as they are parts to a car he's restoring.

My other sister i'm not so sure about. I'll find out this Christmas when I give her a Factory Remanufactured iRoomba Vacuum/Robot I got from amazon for her. She really wanted one someday but the cost for a brand new one is just so high.

Oh, and every year I ask for used dvds and games but get new ones instead. For my birthday this year my wife finally saw the benefit of buying used DVD Boxsets, as I can save a ton on them, especially if they are star trek related.

My ex-in-laws used to give me used DVDs and video games. They got them cheaper at the video store that way. They only had so much money, so I didn't complain. They always worked fine and I got more of them than I would have had they bought new.
