i got a question for you guys, do you display repaints? as in the same character (ie movie ratchet has like 5 recolors) or just display one version, but if it is renamed as a different character (that's a different story)? my bookcases are getting pretty full and i think ive decided to weed some recolors out and put them away, but im having a hard time with it, since i like to see all my toys displayed. what do you guys think?

if you wanna see how cluttered it is click on my collection link below. here is an example of 1 shelf, since some people wonder without clicking on my collection thread.
    -5 optimus primals (2 japanese exclusives, 1 japanese version,1tru exclusive,2 regular release)
    -6 cheetors (1 japanese reissue,3 variants, 2 regular release)
-4 rhinoxs (1 japanese reissue, 3 regular release)
-7 dinobts (2 renames, 2 japanese versions, 3 regular releases)
    -4 robot masters optimus primals
-2 airazors (1 dvd exlcusive, regular release)
-2 tigatrons (1 japanese reissue, 1 regular release)
    -2 snarls (1 rm, 1 regular release)
-2 optimus primal bats ( 1 japanese exclusive, 1 regular)

which ones would you pull off.......the movie line is another story.......i wanna pull them all off lol.

Display them all as long as they're new characters (repaints) but not those battle-dmg repaints.

I typically only buy one version of each mold.

The exception is Classics/Universe figs, in which I display all.

    Agreed (for the most part).

With instances like my Alt/BT collection, I create different characters with them. For instance, "Meister" and "Zoom" (red Meister BT) are two different characters. :)  I also troop build with certain figures :)

I've started only buying one version of each characer (well, one version per universe), so for the most part I only have one version of each character displayed. If it's a good repaint of a mold that gets renamed to create a different character (ie Universe Treadbolt), I'll display it. I've stopped buying repaints of the same character, but I display the few I own and give them different names. For example, my Movie Rescue Ratchet is a movie version of Wheeljack (a bit of a stretch, I know).

I display everybody, but to save space I'll put repaints behind the original so there still there but you can't really see it. If I run out of space I just get more space >_>...

All depends on how it looks as a display. As others have stated, Universe repaints are different characters with significantly different color schemes, so they all get displayed, but with the movie, I don't need 18 bumblebees clogging up the shelf (although I have three of the Deluxes mixed in), and things like Rescue or Tuner, or Blazing have no place in my collection. For me it is having a clean, organized, and well thought out display (my personal preference), and all the repaints can clog it up.

Part of it is space, part of it is having a clean display, and a greater part is having enough money in my wallet to buy other cool stuff like Encores, MPs, Henkeis.

Edit, just noticed who started the thread, in your case Miasboytoy, yes I would display them and all their glory. But by the time we get to movie 5, you are gonna have a whole shelf of Deluxe Bumblebees with crazy cannons, gunarms, battlemasks everywhere.

On my main Classicsverse shelf, I simply display one version of each character, whether I bought the Hasbro or Takara deco (Cyclonus being my only exception so far).

But in your case Miasboytoy, the only real solution is getting more shelves, not putting away toys. Take over other rooms in your place if you have to. You should not hide a single figure away in your collection.

Why? I'm understanding what everyone is saying perfectly well without pictures of their collections. The original question did not really demand pictures to be answered...

Because picture are never enough IMO. And this is a qeustion of estethic. When that is the case it is always best to show what you're talking about, especialy since people have different tastes and ideas.

I only display my favourite figs. Most of the others are either lying in a scrapheap, or in 55L boxes somewhere.

I dpon't care if it's a variant, i just display it if i like it enough. Also, i like to have a custom next to a non custom of the same figure, just to show non-bashers what the benefits are.

I've got everyone on display..but my collection is only about a hundred-twohundred, so right now they fit exactly on four shelves. I can imagine it becomes alot more troublesome if you have a bigger collection. :)

If I have the space, then I'll display all repaints and variants and such. When pressed for space, like I am now, I start putting repaints/variants away in the following order:

    - Variants of the same figure - Whichever variant I like best stays out.
    - Same-character repaints - I generally keep the deco out that matches the character's media representation and put the other away.
    - Same character, different size classes - Whichever size class has the better figure stays out on the shelf.
    - Different character repaints - Which version gets put away first usually depends on which character I like better. If it comes down to two characters I like equally, the older figure gets put away.

If you weren't going to display them because they are repaints... why get them? :D

BUT.. if it's because of space issues, I just display my favorites and then go through a rotation.
