Buy repaints? I ADORE repaints. Well, interesting/good/unexpected ones, at least. A lot of my favorite figures are repaints. Hell, my favorite Seeker is Thundercracker, he's just a glorified repaint. I really enjoy when HasTak or FP finds a genius repaint from an existing figure. I have no upper limit for the number of times I will buy the same mold, as long as the versions continue to be clever and aesthetically pleasing.
once i get runamuck, i'll have all the generations WJ repaints. i also intend to get g1 colors leader ironhide to go next my movie colors leader ironhide EDIT: i usually go with what Silk Spectre said. only if it's one of "my" characters and if it's not half-assed. i only buy the ones that are just repaints and have the exact same mold that look good enough and i only do it with good reason (e.g. runamuck and over-run)
depends on a number of things; if there's an alternate head, the design of said alternate head, how much I like the mold, or the paint scheme. Its all about the design for me.
depends, if it's a repaint that conveys a diffrent character, looks better than the initial or carries a good piece of fiction behind ti sure. Always think back to Energon Dreadwing when this question arises. ZERO fiction attached to it, just a repaint plopped down on the shelves....MAN was it sexy!
The best gauge of how many repaints I will buy us how compelling the fiction is. Basically I am a sucker, give me even a small reason to "need" a figure and I will bite.
Depends. Usually I pass on the dumb looking ones-DOTM Bumblebee Kmart 2-pack comes to mind. Also pass on the ones I decide I don't really need, like the black HA Skids. However, if the repaint is particularly fan-wanky, I buy them to support that idea (and because they're awesome). These include the DOTM Walmart exclusive "track ready" Bumblebee and Sideswipe and the red DOTM Ratchet. Also if the repaint makes the figure look awesome and different from the original I'll usual get it. Most recent example is the black deluxe Topspin repaint-he's sort of my stand-in for the unreleased Twintwist version.
Tons of things factor in, which is why I chose etc. Could be bec a repaint turns it into a character I like, or if I just like the paint job on the figure.
I use to buy everything until ROTF. I'd still buy Armada/RID/Animated/G1 repaints.... maybe even Prime. Back when Armada started the practice of repainting the whole line.... I was kind of pissed about it. Buying everything twice just seemed like a cash grab to me.... but I loved it so much I didn't even think twice about doing it. After that it was just sort of a given that I'd be buying repaints for every mold, and it didn't bother me. I know there were a few I didn't get.... like repaint Energon Omega Supreme. Now it depends on the line. But, I think if I like a line enough to collect it in the first place... I'd most likely get repaints.
As a rule, if I collect a series of molds, then I'll get every version of that mold, unless the colors aren't nominally different than a previous incarnation. I got rid of Rage over Cybertron Prime for that reason. I only kept Bee because I'm customing up a yellow Cliffjumper and red Bumblebee.
This. Usually I'll buy the original version of the mold if I like it, but sometimes I don't like it until the repaint comes out (DotM Sideswipe/Darksteel, Generations Thunderwing/Black Shadow). Sometimes I hold off on the original in hopes of a repaint, but that always seems to bite me in the behind (this is especially true with Optimus Prime figures, since they have pretty much stopped getting repaints that aren't exactly the same as the original, but with less paint).
Depends on whether it's a more luxurious version of the original (ie the same paintjob, but better detail ala the premium line from first movie), an existing character (ie Bluestreak, Prowl). If either of these are ticked, I generally pick them up.
I chose ect. My answer is a mixture of a good mold and great colors plus the actual character. Other than that I would not spend the money.
depends.....Classics is my main line and straight repaints like Skywarp Thundercracker Dirge Thrust Smokescreen Bluestreak Cliffjumper Red Alert were essential to me.
