They do in Beast Wars. I just watched the ep where they're all blind and fall in the river, making various complaints about breathing and such.

It could just be a simple matter of cooling internal mechanisms, like a car's fan. They wouldn't need to breathe in space since it's already colder than a witches teat. For the purposes of internal cooling anyways.

The challenge there would be keeping internal mechanisms warm.

I don't think they breathe like we do. Smell is not necessarily tied to breathing, after all. They don't have lungs or run off internal combustion, so I don't think they really need it.

In the case of the Beast Wars TFs though, the line blurs a bit, as they do have organic parts that could require respiration.

Beast Wars is an exception as they took on somewhat organic bodies.

Otherwise no, I don't imagine they would or would need to. The "smell" Ironhide's refering to is just as easily explained by him using his sensors to detect what's in the air. Basically what our olfactory receptors do.

Then again things differ in different continuities. Its difficult to keep track! :lolol

I think in BW the breathing was more to support their Beast Mode Shells

Transformers have "olfactory sensors"...so they can smell. But that doesn't mean they can breathe, too. In the case of TFA Sari Sumdac (who is technically half-Transformer) and all other techno-organics (Optimus Primal, Cheetor, Waspinator, etc) they can breathe because they are, well...organic beings like us humans...partially...yeah...

I remember in Energon when Ironhide was learning to Powerlinx he was told (by Jetfire, I think) that he needed to control his breathing or something like that. Which just sounds dumb on many levels.

I wouldnt say they "breathe" in the same way/purpose humans do. Id say they inhale/exhale air for possibly cooling their body's systems. If they "smell", they probably analyze things in the air

    Umm...

Okay, space doesn't work that way. Objects lose heat via conduction, convection, or radiation.

Radiation is the least efficient method and also normally the only one available in space. There's no air to carry heat away from an object. It has "nowhere to go" so to speak. In fact, venting heat from systems so they don't fry is a challenge that still has to be overcome in space exploration.

Planetside or in water, I can see many TFs having internal cooling fans and/or circulating coolant reserves as well as heat sinks. Some of them may also have the ability to draw air in to concentrate chemical traces over olfactory sensors.

Breathing is something else than an internal cooling system, like the fans on your computer CPU.

Breathing is to provide oxygen to vital organs in organisms.

It seems highly unlikely, TF's need actual oxygen.

Even ignoring BW/BM organics, what they do, or why they do anything resembling breathing is strange.

Oddly enough, recall that in TFTM (The real one), Galvatron chokes Hot Rod, who gasps for air until he grabs The Matrix and pulls away. Then there are other examples like Inferno releasing a puff of warmer air before he takes a snipers shot in an episode of Energon/Superlink in the cold.

I would say no to needing Oxygen, but yes to breathing.

I think it's already been said but smelling things can be done by machines.
I think there are machines now that can do it.I don't see anything wrong with TF's smelling.

    Breathing is a little trickier.

Not knowing exactly WHAT Energon is, I will say this: On earth, many of the fuels we use REQUIRE oxygen to burn. In the absence of oxygen, a candle will not burn, even though the fuel(the wax) is present. So, I would say that Transformers would possibly need oxygen to process Energon properly, and could obtain it by "breathing" in robot mode.

    I'd say yes.

They need oxygen to combust their fuel, which also explains why most of them are not capable of independent interstellar flight.

Also makes them more relatable to us mere squishy carbon based lifeforms.

I like to think of that scene like this: You ever jam a potato in an exhaust pipe?
