how do you know when they have stopped making a certain figure.. besides repaints? just when you stop seeing them on the shelves?

also.. are the masterpiece figures limited to a certain # of them made?

I thought they "retired" characters after the series ends... then comes the Encores.

    At least for G1

umm it is hasbro/takara, they don't retire squat lol!

unless it envolves them having to get a license, lol like example, the car brothers from RID, or the cars from G1.

but it is hasbro/takara, both LOVE repaints lol!

One resource you may want to check is Entertainment Earth. They list Transformers by the case. So you can see preorders for upcoming waves, and notice when old toys drop off.

Say you're looking for the Universe Legends Jazz. He's first found in wave two, but also in wave two, revision one, wave two, revision two and wave three. But he drops out in wave four.

I guess a mold/figure is officialy "retired" once it is destroyed from over-use.

wait a minute... they won't put two deluxe ratchets on the pegs at the same time but they'll have two different legends bumblebees on the pegs at the same time? Those things are nearly identical looking!

I agree with you. If hasbro thinks it can make money from a certain mold they'll use it till its no good. Sometimes they'll just retire a mold if it just ends up being a crappy figure.

I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I believe that the Car Brothers molds where made out of inferior materials compared to a lot of the ones they use today, hence why they broke down only after a few repaints.

what aboit the car robots versions..would they still be useful for reissues in 2010 or 2011.....

the majority of the G1 tpys are gone also....i think hasbro lost them when they movied to the kenner's office during beast wars.

Beast Wars- i know rattrap and terrorsaur are out.

The Car Robot releases and RID releases used the same molds.

As far as G1 molds go. I'm sure they'll keep the most important ones (like Optimus and Megatron) in as good as shape as they can.

MP Convoy went through a second run before the version with a trailer was launched. There's also a second run of MP Magnus and Megatron.

i think only x-brawn's mold is destroyed. some molds last longer then others, they finally broke the original millenium falcon mold recently and had to make a new one.

By definition I don't think Ty repaint their toys.
Although if you go by the strict definition of "repaint". Then Hasbro has only done that twice.

I figure it still has at least a few uses left in it.

Acid Storm seems to still be fine.

Still, that's one mold that'll end up being retired due to overuse eventually.

Not read every post, but as I'm sure people are suggesting, "retirement" really occurs when a toy's mould is too knackered to be used anymore, and when the character is no longer popular or a poor seller.

Some moulds, such as the G1 Dinobots and Soundwave, are often said to be lost or wrecked beyond repair, and I think some recentish moulds are meant to be getting a bit worn out too, eg Classic Seekr and Binaltech Suburu... but don't quote me on that :)

As for Masterpieces, there's been second runs of Convoy and Magnus, and of Skywarp as well i think. That said, a Masterpiece run will doubtless be far smaller in comparison to say a Movie or Animated run, just because they're aimed at a different and smaller market.

Maybe someone can help me with this, because I'm confused. In working with miniatures (games like Warhammer, 40K, etc.), it seems they go through molds on a similiarly large scale. But when things brake down with their molds (for whatever reason) it seems they just repair or rebuild the mold and continue on. Certain figures get produced in large numbers every year and have been relatively unchanged for most of that time (Space Marines come to mind, they've used the same mold for at least 7+ years). And they usually look good enough that you would not be able to tell they had to fix anything on it.

So, in theory couldn't Hasbro/Takara just do that here? If Classics Prime starts breaking down, just rebuild/repair and keep running him. I mean, G1 Prime gets re-issued almost every year by either Takara or Hasbro, so wouldn't his mold have broken down by now?
