I read something to that effect yesterday and I don't apply it to myself - I like both - but I was wondering if it's common to only like one or the other (or neither).

I consider myself a fan of both, though I'm a bigger fan of Wars than Trek. It boggles my mind when people get so anal about one franchise is better than the other, but I think they're just a very loud minority and most fans are fairly chilled on the issue.

Doubt it. I like Star Wars, but I don't care about Star Trek. It's not like I hate it, I just don't care about it.

I never hated one or the other. I grew up watching both Star Wars and Star Trek with my dad and my older brother, and I have fond memories of both. I like SW better, and my brother likes ST better, but neither one of us hates the other franchise.

Hmm odd comment I read people were talking like it was excepted wisdom to dislike the other if you like one of them.

I don't think they clash any more than liking Farscape, Lost in Space, Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica might though - people do seem to see them as separate things though rather than both as Sci-Fi / Science Fantasy.

I heard a similar comment that suggested you can't like Lost in Space / Voyage to the Bottom of the sea and Star Trek : TOS which also perplexed and mystified me too.

I always liked SW more, but I never hated Trek...I just never got far beyond the Original Series and the movies in my interest for it.

Of course, ironically, thanks to Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman, the new Trek is more like Star Wars than ever.

There are some fans out there who can care less, some who act like the fans in Fanboys(some of that stuff is just gold!). Me? I am all about Star Wars, but I'll watch Trek on occasion.

I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan, and I love Trek too, even if not to the same extent. I know what you mean though, when I was a kid I "automatically" hated Trek because it seemed like the stereotypically natural thing to do. That was until I discovered the Original Series movies, which showed me a side of Trek that I never expected to see. The Star Trek movies are among the most heartwarming films dealing with compassion, fraternity, friendship, and teamwork that I've ever seen.

In this respect, for me, both Star Wars and Star Trek are vastly different. Star Wars is a space fantasy, it deals with myths, legends and epic war stories of heroes and their battles, much like the epics of our past history. Star Wars examines the themes of human civilization, how they rise and fall, and of good and evil, that is, of morality and spirituality.

Star Trek, a sci-fi adventure is set on a closer, more intimate and personal scale, and talks simply about a team of officers who embark on adventures that explore facets of humanity. Instead of the wider focus of Star Wars, Star Trek simply focuses on personal relationships, what it means to be human and what it means to persevere in the face of overwhelming odds.

That is why, in my view, neither can replace the other.

i never got the "rivalry" between star trek and star wars. star trek is straight off science fiction.

while star wars is more of science fantasy. it has more in common with lord of the rings, then it does star trek, the fact that it takes place in space really has very little to do with the plot. it'd be basically the same movie series if all took place on one planet, and instead of space ships there were planes.

hell, star wars has more in common with the new thundercats then it does with star trek.

star trek is a much more realistic universe, based on exploring the universe.

star wars is about an intergalactic rebellion with people on both sides with magic powers. and a whinny bitch who is born some one's bitch, and dies some one's bitch. *thanks lucas, you really "IMPROVED" darth vader with those prequels. :lol

I liked both very much up until around the Haden ghost then my attitude toward Wars took a rapid and steep nose dive. Further buried by the questionable versions of the "clone wars". The new Noooo monkey crap at the end of Rotj was the final in the coffin for my caring about Wars, giving every bit of Wars merch I own to goodwill.

However it is not at all related to my love of Trek as they don't effect each other much when you really look at it.

I've just always been a Star Wars fan, nothing against Star Trek.

I kinda compare this to the Marvel/DC debate.
