Seeing that WST Tracks really got me thinking.

Was Tracks actually designed to have a flying car mode?

Many Diaclone cars that predate TFs had wings of some sort, and many of them had no purpose in car mode (Wheeljack, Inferno, Hoist).

Doesn't it stand to reason that at least one would turn up that could, by pure chance, sprout some wings in car mode?

I mean, it looks pretty awkward, doesn't it? His arms pointing forward like that. So I guess I'm asking - how many people think this was an actual design plan, and how many people think it was a Hasbro invention that just happened to look plausible?

I know some people will bring up Overdrive in response to this, but those Omnibot cars all had battle modes of some kind, and I'm not even sure Overdrive was meant to fly either... Downshift sort of had wings too, but they just didn't draw him flying in the air. Maybe they were all just wings meant to stabilize a super-fast car. It's an easy mistake to make - I used to think Topspin was a jet. Diaclones just look jet-like, is all :)

Now anyone with a Diaclone pic of Tracks in flight mode can end this conversation before it begins, but is there such a thing? If not, it sort of proves my theory.

No idea, but I love flying cars. Tracks and Overdrive are pretty cool.

Don't know if it was a Hasbro invention or not, but they sure used the living crap out of it in the original cartoon.

I remember I used to convert Tracks from car mode to "jet" mode all the time as a kid to take on Ramjet and Dirge.

Flying cars were all the rage in the 80's. The M.A.S.K. toys had plenty of them. The movies had tons of them. They were everywhere, with a promise that we would have them by 2000....

Still waiting on my flying Subaru to show up at the local dealer.

I don't get where "flying car" comes from, Tracks is a Corvette Stingray. Not much futurism in an early-70s muscle car.

Because in car mode you could easily pull Tracks' arms out and thus pull his wings out as well... VWA-LA flying car mode!

I think the idea was to hybrid together popular model cars of the time with futurism to sell the model car trend and Star Wars/Gundam in one product line.

I really don't think it was an afterthought...the gun was designed to peg into the hole on the underside of the car to give it a 'floating' look. Though I guess again that could have been a feature someone figgured out later of course.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, if so apologies...but Tracks did have a "flying car mode" where his robot mode wings sprouted out. It was used in the cartoon.

I'm pretty certain that the flying car mode was an intentional design choice by Takara. The way the gun pegs to the underside of the vehicle is a pretty good indicator that the Stingray mold was always designed to have the flying mode as an official transformation. The gun is far too big for the car to roll with it attached, and the peg on the gun serves no other purpose than to plug onto the underside of the car.

Actually, I was sadly surprised the BinALT Tracks didn't really have a flight mode. Being a flying car is what really set G1 Tracks apart from the average Autobot. It wasn't a one time use like the grappling hook of Jazz or Hot Rod's saws.

Yeah, the gun thing is pretty conclusive. There's no way that would be there if not for a deliberate flight mode. Thanks, Switchblade!

I as well have seen a diaclone pic with the wings out, i think it's in the commercial actually, i cna't remember, but yes, i believe even without printed proof, and going just by the gun peg, it was meant to fly.

kind of "out there"...but you brought up M.A.S.K.

anyone catch how Mattt Tracker from that show showed up as "Specialist Trakker" in GI Joe's line of toys?

Maybe we can get his car "Thunderhawk" as a bot in TransFormers ;)

Flying cars also does remind me of MASK. That would be cool either as a small homage for Thunderhawk or the next crossover line.

    Ebay:
    I believe Tracks can fly
I believe Tracks can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread Track's wings and fly away
    I believe Tracks can soar
I see him running through that open door
    I believe Tracks can fly
    I believe Tracks can fly
    I believe Tracks can fly

    I love that gimmick

And here I thought that it was just so he'd have somewhere to holster the rifle in bot mode.

What, you haven't heard about the fact that the Big 3 have a 42 billion dollar "Flying Car" bailout package tied into their existing request to Congress?
