Being semi-new and newbish to the kitbash scene, I felt I'd come to you masters for some advice about where to begin my next mammoth personal project. At some point down the road, I'd like to build a set of the dinobots, with more articulation than the G1 series, but very closely resembling their molds.

I've surfed through Ebay for several weeks, only to find authentic G1s ($50+) and KOs; this seems a bit expensive, and thought I'd ask if there are 'alternative' options to obtain the dinos.

I know building them from scratch is an option, but I'd prefer buying G1s to save miles of time. I also have (stored away) my T-rex zoid (pictured above) which I think would make a nice base start for Grimlock, and perhaps if I go that route, I could use Zoid kits to create the others.

Has anyone done something like this, or can recommend a nice direction to start from?

Keep surfing Ebay, last year I picked up a set of all five G1 dinos from a guy who didn't know what they were really worth.

And as of last month I've seen G1 Sludge and Snarl go for around $25-35 each.

Well, I think you'll need to pay that much for each. Since you are going to mod them perhaps you can buy junkers and add articulation to them. There are KO's but those seem to go for more than loose originals. TFMaster was working on an articulated Grimlock about the size of an alternator, but mostly from scratch. I don't think he ever finished it though. It was so bad ass though I have plans to copy it someday. You have a pic of Monstrous there. Do you plan to make that? That's my dream project right there so it would be kick ass if someone attempted it.

Keep checking the boards here. I've recently found a Sludge for like $20 I think. Just use the search function and dig through all the threads. Good luck man. If you can actually accomplish these you will be freakin' amazing. Not that you aren't already but I'd bump you up a notch or 2 in the amazing category :thumb

Monstrus is so cool! Do it! Do it now! LOL Glad to see I am not the only one attempting their own ScratchBuild/Kitbash. I think that G1 would be easier but wouldn't building your own make it easier to incorporate them together? Any who I really want to see this happen.

This is a great idea. I always thought that the Autobots needed something similar to that Predaking combiner.

That zoid would be a good start. Perhaps look at the Power Ranger dinosaur version for base parts? I don't remember how many dino's they had in common with this...

Well, if he wants to do Monstrous, he'll have to make two of his own anyway. Its made of 7 unique Dinobots. the original 5, plus two new ones that he'd have to scratch-build. One you can see plainly on the arm, and its transformation scheme seems to be extremely simple. The other, though, is a small raptor, and he seems fairly complicated on top of his smaller stature. He becomes the waist and thighs.

Maybe a local Mom and Pop toy collector store in your neighborhood? There's one in Phoenix that sells loose ones at really low prices. Since the movie, they have a lot more, in a wide range.

Tuscon, AZ and Savannah, GA have stores like that as well.

:cry  I have so always wanted a ankylosaurus that looks like he was released with the original dinobots. The only ankylosaurus was that crappy shell former from one of the Beastwars lines.

well, I'm just testing the waters here. I've seen a few already done (i'd post pics of them but I can't, heh) I plan to use the zoids t-rez as grimlock still, because it's massively huge, probobly gonna use zoids as a base for the other ones as well, just because they fit the style great. In the meantime, i need to finish up devastator, and get menasor combined up.

I've always wanted to see a Dinobot combiner since seeing the very first TF checklist that said they could form into a robot named Dynamo. But not that I think about it, how over-powered would a Dinobot combiner be?

FR, if you would like to have images show up, and seeing as this is more a discussion thread anyway, I can move this to our General Discussion forum, which allows for normal IMG tags to work in its threads.

That looks pretty cool. Are those two other dinobots actual characters with names or a fan character?
