Apart from the accessories of course...

    Hasbro
    - more paint apps
    - blunted teeth
    - blunter claws
    - duller gold toe claws (plastic?)
    - gold part where the thighs peg into has a duller gold (plastic?)
    - inside fork that holds the robot chest is plastic (?)
    - Robot chest has a clearer plastic
    - neck has a clearer plastic
    - weighs less (?)

    Takara
    - less paint apps
    - sharper teeth
    - sharper claws
    - shinier gold toe claws (metal)
    - gold part where the thighs peg into has a shinier gold (metal)
    - inside fork that holds the robot chest is partially metal
    - Robot chest has a darker clear plastic
    - neck has a darker clear plastic
    - weighs more (?)

Can someone else confirm if Hasbro has less metal parts?

Sounds about right. The thighs (in dino mode) and shoulders (in bot mode) on Takara match better as far as the gold chrome goes. No red striped white bars on the bicep (bot)/leg (dino) swivel either on the Takara version (Hasbro does have these decorations).

So the Hasbro does have less metal parts?

or the metal parts used on the Hasbro version just weighs less?

To the touch, the Takara version feels a lot colder than the Hasbro one.

I don't think it has fewer metal parts, the claws are metal, just not chromed. Not sure about the other thing you mentioned, I don't have my Grimlock on-hand.

I don't have a Takara version but I'm assuming that the "weighs more" thing is based on that false assumption.

    Ebay:
metal plastic ratio is the same, new molds would be needed to make them in plastic, waste of money

Follow up question, for those who have (or had both), anyone tried mixing parts to make a better Grimlock?

Which parts did you guys use? Any pics?

Is there any noticeable difference between gold chrome around the waist on dino mode/chest on robot mode? A more crisp reflection on the Takara one? Right? I think we're talking about the same thing...

Not sure why anyone would do that. Takara MP Grimmy is already great to me (I dig the gold chrome matching better, the unblunted/sharp teeth and claws, the lack of the red-striped white bars--they look tacky to me, and the accessories--save the lack of his crown, but not a deal breaker; it's always a hoot dressing Grimmy up as a dino waiter XD).

... if you happen to do work on Grimlocks and wind up with a spare left hand, let me know. My MP Grimlock's left hand is broken and it makes me quite sad.

I'm getting rid of one of them and don't know which one. I love both em' but really don't need both. So yeah, I'm trying mix parts.

Yeah, now that you mention it the red and white stripes do look kinda cheesy. They look like those 80's stickers poor excuse for detailing.

I love how the red on the Hasbro one just pops out though compared to the duller red one on the Takara version.

Got both. Don't know if it's a universal thing across the board, but I found Takara's to be of "better" quality.

Especially with the legs on mine - the Takara one holds up better when I use different poses.

Do like me, get the Takara version and find someone willing to sell you just the crown from the Hasbro version. VoilĂ , MP Grimlock Perfect Edition.

different properties of metal used in die cast. Which may also explain MP Megs feet.

I'm not sure if Takara's has less paint, or just different paint. I'm not positive, but I thought only Takara's had the two tone face (very subtle dark grey painted over part of Grimmy's bot face).

In fact I actually got hold of a crown and only ever used it once because I was afraid it would scrape his face paint (it fits quite snugly).

Over all I've got the impression that MP Grimlock is the MP toy with the most similarities between Hasbro's and Takra's versions (I could be wrong).

The paint apps on MP Grimlock mimic the stickers found on the original toy. The Takara version is more plain.

It's the typical difference between Hasbro & Takara Masterpieces: Hasbro's look cheaper and/or littered with gawdy sticker replica paint decos, and Takara's look more high end and collectable.

I have both. Regarding the metal, it's apparent the number of metal parts are the same between the two, though they do seem a bit different. Not noticing a difference in weight (the one that seemed heavier at first to me turned out the Hasbro one. The coating/coloring is different. Takara's looks like just a light tinting over the bare metal color, while Hasbro's has a more solid paint overcoat. It's possible that's why the Takara metal feels a bit colder - differently insulated.

Hasbro's has the dark grey paint on Grimlock's face too.

The metal content is exactly the same on both. The bars that hold the chest on, the crotch, the dinosaur toes, the shoulder mounts, everything that's metal on the Takara version is metal on the Hasbro version.

No hasbro MP has ever had different diecast content from the japanese version. I have no idea where people even get that idea.
