I have the "privilege" of federal jury duty next month. I've only done local (NYC) jury duty. Any difference between federal and state/local jury duty? I'm guessing it'll probably be mostly the same. A lot sitting around and waiting.

One sees state offenses, and the other sees federal crimes? I imagine any differences would be due to the case itself, rather than the state/federal level.

So you guys have a mandatory jury duty but an optional voting for Presidential/parties elections?

Unless you have a good reason or a note from a doctor.

Good point. We should not have mandatory anything in a society that says they are free.

I just would have thought it would have been the other way around. It's mandatory to vote here in Australia, but that's it.

I'm selected for Federal jury duty all this month. So far I haven't been selected.

I'd rather go to jail than serve jury duty.

Isn't it that you get mandatory jury duty if you're registered to vote?

The prison you go to if you blow off the summon to report for said Jury duty, or perhaps who gets the money from the fine you would get slapped with.

tanDLC if you register to vote, I believe your name gets added to the list for possible summons to jury duty.

Used to be the way they had you on their lists-voter registration...now they used all licensed drivers within the state you live...so the old can't get me because I don't vote won't work anymore. At least that's true where I live, I got a notice to show up for selection about a week after I renewed my drivers license. hee hee.

As for the difference? Probably Federal Cases only I would think..different court locations, other than that maybe more of less J D payments...a whole $22 a day the last time I was on a jury. That replaces my daily pay..right.

    Pfffft, right.

Until they start sending summons registered mail, they can't prove you ever got it.

It's voter registration and DMV registration now.

Don't know why people find jury duty so bad? When I had it, I loved it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. What makes them decide to make it mandatory I don't know. It being a high profile case or something, I guess?

I got selected for jury duty a couple years ago myself, and the day I went down to the courthouse there was probably close to a hundred people in stuck waiting in line too. I lucked out because since so many people showed up they were letting everyone opt out of it if they wanted to. I of course did just that and went on back home.
