Two of my mates who saw the film, one of whom was extremely critical on it to the point where it annoyed me, ("RHW's face looked weird." ect.) said that they thought Sentinel Prime's betrayal was predictable. He also said it was unoriginal and had been done many times before in other movies.

I strongly disagreed with them and so did my brother. We both thought that, if anything, it was unpredictable just because of the fact he was a Prime and Optimus' mentor. After seeing the trailer, I literally thought, "Shit. The only way they'll be able to win is if Sentinel Prime kicks major ass!". So I was genuinely shocked when he betrayed them, that scene left me with goosebumps in the theatre, especially since it was when the Autobots needed him most.

But that's beside the point, what did you guys think? Predictable or unpredictable? What were your mates or families reaction to it?

Best kept secret in the movie. Thanks Shockwave!

I thought it was unpredictable and well pulled off. I'm surprised they were able to keep it under wraps for so long, at least until the adaptions came out.

Let's face it: every plot twist has been done before. Half the time a character stays loyal, half the time a character defects.

I've seen films where I saw the twist coming from miles away, and I've seen films where I was genuinely surprised by it. It just really differs from movie to movie, from person to person.

I knew it going in since I read spoilers, so I can't really say.

Seeing how the first thing he does when Prime wakes him up is attacks him though, so it's kinda hinted at.

I sure didn't see it coming. I was shocked when he turned his gun on Ironhide.

The part that made it unpredictable to me was the fact that Sentinel turned down the Matrix from Prime. Still wondering why he didn't take it...

Also when Wheelie says, "This is the one where Spock goes nuts or mad." when he's watching Star Trek hints at it as well, though most people wouldn't catch this.

It surprised me - but only because I didnt try and anticipate the story before hand. In retrospect it was obvious and it is a plot line that is almost as old as the movie industry itself.

Just think of movies/TV series that have a similar plot element (i.e. the leader, master or teacher turning out be be evil or traiterous)

    Batman (Ra's al Ghul)
    LOTR (Saruman)
    Broken Arrow (Deakins)
    The A-Team (General Morrison)
Battlestar Galactica - TV series (Admiral Cain)
    Spiderman 3 (Doc Oc)

I don't think it was that predictable, but I think it could've had a more profound effect had Optimus and Shockwave really battled in the beginning with OP getting his ass handed to him. Then it would've looked as if the autobots really needed SP making his betrayal all the more incredible.

Because of certain board member's inabilities to gatekeep their thread titles (before the movie came out, I mean), I indirectly learned about Ironhide's death and Sentinel's betrayal through "clever" thread titles like "Will you be upset if Ironhide died (spoiler)" and "Will you still like Sentinel if he (spoilers)?"

But I kinda ignored it. So I was expecting those two elements, but it still blew my mind when Sentinel turned on Ironhide, because I thought maybe the cons were going to kill him. I'm glad that was still a bloody surprise.

I'll admit I didn't see it coming. Yeah there were hints, but they're only glaringly noticeable in hindsight (sorta like Sixth Sense).

It helps that all the posters, etc., kept pimping Shockwave out as the major villain.

Though I suppose the toy line dropped a bit of a hint when they didn't do a leader-class Decepticon.

My theory is that because the matrix must be earned - if had taken it, it would have turned to dust thereby giving the game away regarding his betrayal.

Very good point. Never thought of it that way. Shockwave did serve to throw us off.

For me it was the only clever thing in the film.

I don't think so, cause it didn't do that in ROTF when the Fallen took it.

I remember when certain members got their hands on his leader class and said, "His eyes turn red for some reason. That's weird!". It all makes sense now ;)

I already knew about it from the spoilers but when it happened my wife (who only knew anything about the movie from maybe two trailers) turned to me and said "I called it". I didn't ask the others who saw the movie with us though.

    Reasons why it was predictable:

    • He's Sentinel Prime.
    • Optimus not being the leader of the Autobots in the movieverse? Unlikely.
    • His Voyager toy has his Autobot symbol scratched out.
    • He's Sentinel Prime.
    • Megatron wanted him to be alive so badly.
    • "This is the one where Spock goes crazy."
    • He's Sentinel Prime.
