Actually he isn't the one responsible to Prime's Death, at all Megatron is the one who kill Prime, Hot Rod thought he can help Optimus, but fail and used as a robot shield for Megatron.

If Hot Rod had not have interfered, Megatron would not have been able to kill Optimus Prime.

It's Optimus' fault. Instead of just killing Megatron he took his sweet time to listen to him beg. And if he really wanted to he could have gone for a headshot while Megatron was holding Hot Rod.

Nope, but I've got some weird nostalgia thing going that does make me tear up at certain stuff when I watch it now, not that particular part though.

I was at the first showing of the first day at the local theater, btw.

Optimus would have just injured Megatron. He's not a killer.

Then, we could have gone into Season 3 with Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Hot Rod caused a chain reaction, killing Optimus and making Galvatron, killing Megatron.

Cybertron News Network: Snarl why weren't you in TTFTM?

    Snarl: It my day off!

It wasn't anyone's fault it was just destiny working to bring about Rodimus Prime so he could defeat the evil Unicron.

I believe in free will and choice.

It would have been epic to see Optimus and Megatron banding together with their Citybots, gestalts and Titans to beat Unicrons ass.

Given that the question is: Did you cry when Optimus died back in 1986? there seems to be a lot of people not meeting that criteria answering the question.

I'm actually surprised it hasn't already garnered a dozen "G1 sucked" sort of comments. It's usually what happens when someone tries to do a specific thread like this.

    G1 is the best!

Even today, the toys that are being made are G1.

    The comic books are G1.

    The movies are G1.

    G1 dominates and rules!

I was 5 when I saw it, on VHS as well. Cried then, and still fill up now at 35.

No shame, Optimus was my hero as a kid. Iron giant and Big Hero 6 hit me right in the feels as well.

No, but I felt a tinge of disbelief & sadness when Starscream was reduced to ashes. That's the exact moment, when the movie ends in my soul. After that, it's just a bunch of new faces doing stuff for the next 45 minutes, but the whole time I still keep seeing Starscream crumbling in my mind.

(Not really, but it does mark where the seasons 1 & 2 cast are officially done in the movie & step aside for the new toys. And it's kind of depressing)

This may be straying slightly off-topic, but I feel like TFTM is best when you read it as a "buddy movie" or road trip flick (about Hot Rod and Kup) that just happens to be set over a backdrop of the conclusion of the season 1 & 2 era events.

I was fine with his death. I really enjoyed Rodimus and the new cast. It wen't from a really great afternoon cartoon to a much larger Sci-fi movie adventure to me. Unicron, the Matrix, Quints all the other worlds we seen, expanded the Transformer universe from Earth and Cybertron to an entire Galaxy. I loved that they let people die in this movie. I didn't see it as a move to just push some toys but more as a necessary evolution to keep the franchise fresh with actual real scary consequences. It showed that hero's die and others can rise to the ranks. Also showed emotion, something that a cartoon movie never really did. At least for my 12 year old mind at the time. Still love this movie!

He seemed pretty damn poised to end it all right then and there.

I mean, that whole fight was to the death. It was injuries given by Optimus that nearly kiled Megatron. He was absolutely trying to kill him once and for all, henc ethe whole "no matter the cost."
He wasn't just refering to sacrificing himself.

Not counting Beast Wars or TFA, or most other shows, yes.

With modern day gimmicks and heaps of liberties taken.

Not really. They vaguely resembled G1 to start. Nowadays? Not even close.

    :lol

    Wrong
    Still wrong
    And again

Did you read the original Marvel comic adaptation of the film?

My guess is you didn't because if you had you would know this argument doesn't hold much weight

FYI in that book hot rod never interfered in the fight guess what Optimus still died Optimus still failed to deal with Megatron the way it should have been done

G1 would have gone on longer, maybe even to a season 5 and 6, and another animated movie if Hasbro would have kept Optimus Prime and Megatron as the leaders and just added the new characters.

I cried just as much when Megatron died:

    If not more so.

Rodimus Prime didn't kill the Transformers. Four brothers by the names of Leo, Donnie, Raph, and Mikey did.
