We did not kill the martians because THERE ARE NO MARTIANS.

If you think there is life on Mars you are either a conspiracy theorist or an idiot.

EXCUSE me? And why couldn't there be life on Mars (and I mean bacterial life with that)?

    Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Off your high horse there buddy.

Your definition of a conspiracy theorist is way off.

And unless this would turn into a whole god thing, why do you think that?...

I don't see how thinking there is life on mars can fit into either category, and I look forward to a more in-depth explanation of your point.

Do you think that there could be no life near the thermal vents spewing toxic fumes with water reaching temperatures above boiling at the bottom of the ocean or under antarctic ice where it's easily as cold as mars (because there is).

Did you even read the freaking article?

Wonder if he'll be back to elaborate on his statement? My money is on ... "no."

I love how so many people think that "alien life" automatically means intelligent life, or even complex multicellular organisms.

As Vulcans say, "fascinating." But flamepanther is right - the chance that these microbes would be sentient - or sapient - is slim to none. So while this news is promising for those of us hoping that Mars will eventually be colonized and terraformed, it doesn't mean we're murderers (...unless you're the sort of person who considers killing flies murder).

Basically the article says that the Viking experiments designed to detect life instead killed the little buggers because we didn't understand the physiology of alien microbes.

No conspiracy theories or even multicellular organisms involved.

We did not kill deep sea aquatic life because THERE IS NO DEEP SEA AQUATIC LIFE.

If you think there is life at the deepest depths of the ocean you are either a conspiracy theorist or an idiot.

    :rolleyes2

Okay. That being said, Mars would definitely represent extreme conditions that would give birth to all sorts of strange and possibly specialized life forms. If this hypothesis holds water, it would be very interesting to get a look at these alien species and see how they differ from extremophiles here on earth.

Sentience or no (it's definitely 'no'), can we ethically destroy another planet's native life for our own concerns? We would be no better than the settlers who wiped out the dodo, or the Falkland fox.
