I am working on a project and I have torn apart my comics collection trying to find out if the Cybertronians had any type of currency. I know that energon was sort of sought after/fought over like money or precious gems would here, but did they have any type of credits, coin or anything like that?

    Thanks for the help!

I would assume so. I think it was Bluestreak in an early G1 Episode that said he was a merchant back on Cybertron so I assume that they did have some form of currency although I don't think it's ever really been discussed or detailed.

I remember in the bio for Cybertron cannonball or Cybertron Unicron about Energon coins, you might want to check into that.

    I believe so
Galvatron hired this little pig dude in Season 3 tons of times to do stuff for him (even though he failed all the time). The guy would say always "he needs to do the job so he can get the monies to feed his kids"

Galvatron also mentions in one episode for the decepticons to destroy something so badly that they couldnt sell it to the junkions for scrap.

I think also there was an episode where smokescreen helps an alien win energon chips at a casino.

I think they has some sort of currency

    Unicron's Bio

    Bio:
Many Transformers still Superstitiously toss a small handful of energon coins over one shoulder whenever his name is uttered, for the word itself means chaos and destruction. Once an all powerful eater of entire planets, he was destroyed decades ago by the Autobots. For too long he was trapped in the rusting hulk of his old body. Now, resurrected and redesigned as an unstoppable destroyer tank, he is not yet at full power, but soon all the universe will know him, and tremble.

For my TF projects, I've been using Energon and Energon Cubes themselves as currency.
"100 Energon Cubes for each Autobot you kill! 1000 for the one who kills Optimus Prime!"
Energon is regarded as so precious in every continuity, that some form of it makes sense as currency (especially since it doubles as food / fuel)

I orginally wanted to use Energon Cubes as the currency, but for the purposes of the project, I think it would over-extend it.

I do remember the episode with Smokescreen rigging some slot machine and winning energon coins.

Thanks - I appreciate the help!!!

Energon "coins" were the currency of preference on the gambling asteroid Monacus in the G1 episode "The Gambler," but those were being used by races OTHER than Transformers. Hasn't stopped other fiction making references to Energon as currency amongst TFs, though (which doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense... it'd be like us paying for stuff with chocolate coins). "Galactic credits" were mentioned in "Money is Everything," and in the Marvel UK comics, "Shanix" was a popular currency (Rodimus offered them as a reward for Galvatron's capture).

I'll go for Shanix. Preferably 40,000 of them. :D

As for using energon as currency... it's not unlike the use of spice for trading in the Dune universe. If it's a commodity with some sort of value, it could be used in a barter system.

I used the word "credits" in one of my fanfics. It's probably too Star Treky but I was really thinking of energon coins, just could rememeber what they were called. "Credits" is a generic enough sci-fi term to use, but shanix probably sounds better. Was currency ever mentioned in ep with Sandstorm and Octane eating in that bar?

where the energon as cash comes from is from "Starscream's ghost where Octane and Sandstorm pay for a meal with Energon coins.

I think energon coins are of a weaker concentrate than normal energon explaining why they are of a duller colour

I don't know, but I do remember Hot Rod telling Kup when they were feeding the sharkticons energon goodies that, "This is getting expensive."

Perhaps Energon Coins equates to gold coins, on earth? To me, that would mean Energon Cubes would equate to gold bars, much rarer, demonstrating why they were so fought after.

Energon cubes or coins would be the most widely known currency, they might have had other things like weapons or ships or whatever other things they could barter with.
