There was a garage kit made by a third party group, and there has been on again/off again rumors about a toy from Hasbro for months, but nothing confirmed.
We'll get something this year. That announcement that went up two days ago that got taken down (I'm guessing reasons of prematurity in relations to toyfair) mentioned Drift.
The Hasbro team did show an early design sketch at the end of one of their panels at BC09, so it is (or was) in the works. Doesn't necessarily mean it'll actually make it to production, of course.
Drift is a character from the IDW G1 universe. He is so awesome, that his powers make any aternity character tremble with fear. I hear his power is so great that his testicles are comprised of the G1 and movieverse Matrix of Leadership.
He is all cool and edgy with a tortured past like Wolverine, he is so cool, edgy and unimaginative that Image and Top Cow created the character for IDW. He is also in the young readers Robot Heroes "I am Optimus Prime" book for no reason.
So of all the possible personalities, a character who many consider cool, who is certainly edgy, has a developed tortured past is unimaginative? This is a view some folks carry in fiction-loving circles that I don't understand. Such vague descriptions like "edgy" & "has a tortured past" that leave out the details tend to be perfect for battle-oriented, dramatic & war-torn tales, which is when the details & distinctions then come into play and mark each 'similar' character type as their own individual. Or would you prefer Smuggo, the former Iacon citidel office temp who never really worked before the war began because he had everything handed to him in life offering no back story worth a hoot, now living the good life daily on Nebulon having deserted Cybertron at the brink of war?
Man, if his figure looks anything like Guido's sketches - then Drift could very well be one of the best figures of 2010.
I would voice skepticism to a toy turning out as well as a drawing, but then again, Don created the designs for Classics Optimus and ROTF Bludgeon, and those are 2 of my favorite toys. It's not Guido, but that doesn't mean it can't work again.
Drift looks like a cool TF toy unfortunatly he was over hyped by the IDW and the hack of a writer that came up with him which has more or less turned him into a joke now. Also he is more a less a copy of carnivac from G1 UK marvel comics, except he is a sword whileding car instead of a SpecOps wolf pretender and he not nearly as well written or devloped. Still would totally love a toy of him.
