Did Sentinel Prime only know Ironhide from Ironhide's past as a Decepticon?

The IDW comics, for whatever they are worth, had Ironhide originally as a Decepticon or at least a follower of Megatron if it was before the split into Autobots and Decepticons.

Perhaps Sentinel reasoned that it was acceptable to kill the Decepticon on the Autobot's side...?

From what I hear Ironhide was not technically a Decepticon, he was more of a warrior that joined Optimus's side when he found out what Megatron was planning.

Ironhide was never a Decepticon. He was a solider in the Cybertronian military, alongside numerous Decepticons, but turned his back on them before the civil war truly began.

It's likely that Ironhide distinguished himself during the lengthly civil war as an Autobot and Sentinel Prime had heard of him at least, if not had direct contact with him.

He killed another Autobot cause he's a prick. Ironhide was closest to him before he opened fire on the rest of them. There's not likely much more thought to it than that.

I always thought Sentinel murdered Ironhide because he was the nearest threat that could interfere with his plans

even if he was once a decepticon, its obvious that he has a mindset of an autobot.

    He loves killing decepticons :D

Yeah, this. 'Knock off the enemy's badass gunslinger first' is a pretty sensible course of action to take.

From watching the movies, I think it has nothing to do with his past, but his personality - Ironhide is/was an Autobot through and through. Sentinel knew that Ironhide is completely against the Decepticon cause, and Ironhide wouldn't hesitate to open fire on him.

Honestly, that would have been extremely painful to watch. Hearing Bumblebee trying to muster up a scream from pain and horror to know that Sentinel betrayed them...I'd have wanted Sentinel to finish him off just to keep him from suffering. :(

The more recent IDW comics establish that Sentinel and Ironhide were once on opposite sides, but this predates the rise of Megatron's Decepticons. Ironhide was never a 'con, he was a member of Megatron's Defense Force but he was one of the few who then stayed loyal to Sentinel and Optimus.

Yeah, they weren't close or anything though. Ironhide fought against Sentinel's forces, which included Optimus, Megatron, and Shockwave, because he thought Sentinel was a false Prime who would destroy Cybertron. They made peace and Optimus and Ironhide immediately became friends. So Ironhide = BFF, Sentinel = mentor. They refer to each other after that but don't have lengthy conversations.

Doesn't Sentinel say "I never liked his kind anyway." after killing Ironhide in the comic adaptation?

Well according to the comics Senitel, Megs and Optimus fought against Ironhide when he was with the Thetacons who disbelieved in the all spark/original primes stuff. then he joined them and worked under Megs in Cybertron's army almost all of whom later turned Decepticon but (forcibly) signed up under optimus after he started the Autobot militia...

From Sentinel's Pov Ironhide was never fully "with him" so that might have helped him blow the slag out of him but if we go by comics Sentinel felt just as comfortable doing so to Mudflap and Skids so most likely he was fairly ambivalent over who died just so long as he could get to the Pillars and get out of there...

In the IDW continuity before becoming an Autobot, a convert to Sentinel Prime's cause Ironhide was a Thetacon, not a Decepticon. Thetacons are one of the many tribes that sprung up when everything on Cybertron went downhill post Dynasty of Primes.
