Prime's expression when arriving at NEST HQ should've been enough of an indicator.............

 

In the novel, he finds out prior to returning to NEST and seeing the destruction. In the movie, we don't know when/if he was informed. But he would've undoubtedly have found out within a short time.

Optimus: "Get down here, Sentinel!"
Sentine: "Optimus...you forget your place!"
Optimus: "Autobots, I need cover fire! Ironhide, come in! ... Ironhide?! Where is Ironhide?!"
Sideswipe: "Um, Prime? He died."
Optimus: "What?! When?"
Ratchet: "A day or two ago. You know how he wasn't with us when we were exiled? Yeah. Or when you did that head count after coming ashore out of the Atlantic and he wasn't with us? Or when we shot down that ship that was attacking Epps and Sam and it wasn't Ironhide who did the shooting? Or when we snuck into Chicago and were ambushed by the driller? And we were noticeably absent a big black pickup truck?"
Optimus: "Yes...I...don't see where you're going with this."

Of course Optimus knew.... He wasn't present in Florida or Chicago. Optimus didn't defeat Sentinel and Megatron and think, "Hey guys! Where's Ironhide?!?"

Does it really matter that Optimus finds out? People kept complaining that there was no mourning of Ironhide by anyone. Did any other autobot (besides Arcee) cry about the number of autobots dead at autobot city in the 1980's movie? No, because they were in the middle of a war just like in Dotm. Sentinel just totally screws the Nest base and steals the pillers, (which he said in the wrong hands ment the end of earth), and everyone just expects for every character to cry about one dead autobot. Yes, Ironhide was a straight up beast and we honor him for that, but the autobots, at the time, had a more important situation to deal with.

 

The scene in TF1 with bumblebee being captured by nest was emotional and powerfull and I still to this day believe it will and aways be one of the best moments of the trilogy. If bay did that for bee why not for iron hide? it just seems really cheap to pass up a major side characters death. Im just sayin. Im not a HUGE iron hide fan like some here on TFW2005 but I do hate it when characters get side swiped xd. No mourning or even a mention of hides death by prime was just sad.

Poor attempt at humor aside, it's most likely that one of the Autobots told Optimus about Ironhide's death later on off-screen.

I'd have assumed that Prime probably drove past the corpse upon his return to NEST HQ. Would've been funny if Prime didn't realise it was his corpse and ran him over. "Who left all this junk outsi - oh scrap, Ironhide? Is that you buddy?"

But seriously. If Prime didn't deduce what had had happened at the base, no doubt Ratchet, Bee or Lennox would've informed him. It would've been nice *anyone* said *anything* about his death. Even if Prime just said "Ironhide......." solemnly as he entered the destroyed base would've been enough.

 

Optimus Prime: Have you guys seen Ironhide?
Autobots:: Nope 
Optimus Prime: Well, he's late to our anger management class
Man, I am bad at jokes

I can so imagine a scene where:
Optimus: Is eveyone accounted for? Where's Ironhide?
Ratchet: Ummmmm
Sideswipe: Well ah...
Bumblebee: *Joe from family guy saying "well, funny story.."*
Dino: Look its the fallen!!!!
Optimus turns around yelling: I MUST HAVE HIS FACE!!!!!!!!!!

 

Maybe Optimus thought Ironhide decided to go out for a drive for a few days, missed the massive broadcast exiling the Autobots from Earth, missed a second broadcast proclaiming that Chicago had been destroyed and then forgot his way home to NEST and is now stranded.
And as to those who witnessed his death, Lennox was too busy rage quitting, Sam was too busy spazzing out, Bumblebee can't even speak and all those other random soldiers simply knew him as "that black pick-up truck" and simply forgot about him within a day or two.

I would think that Optimus would have picked up the vibe, that Ironhide was no longer with him. If you think back to the battle sceen with Optimus and Sentinel, Optimus used the same gun on Sentinel that Sentinel used on Ironhide. Optimus shot Sentinel twice

 

Optimus did shoot twice, but it was with Megs hobo rifle.

 

Of course he did. You don't have to see it in the movie - he's the leader of a relatively small group of soldiers and Ironhide is his right hand bot.

 

Remember what that guy with the glasses says, "there's no such thing as a stupid question, until you ask it."

 

Ironhide: "I've seen what he does with his right hand, no thanks"
