    Linus Torvalds- developer of Linux- legally holds the trademark for Linux in the United States, however he only registered it to prevent others from doing so. Originally it was not registered at all (intentionally), but an unaffiliated party attempted to register it in the 90s and they had to sue him to get it back. It is freely distributable under the Gnu General Public License which provisions that anyone is permitted to alter its code as long as they then make that source code and any modifications available to the recipient. The Linux Mark institute handles distributing licenses, which they do free of charge.

    Also, although I agree that no version of linux (at least none of the flavors that are directly called Linux is attractive to the average home user, Linux is far from shit.
