I know the true answer by the credits

    Hugo Weaving was Megatron

    Frank Welker was Soundwave.

And it was awesome having Frank Welker being brought back! This made me so happy like when I learned Peter Cullen would voice Optimus Prime.

However, Soundwave's voice wasn't significantly electronically altered like it had been in the old G1 days. So to me, Soundwave sounded like G1 Megatron.

Was this to let people hear Frank Welker return?

Would you have preferred an exact copy of Welker's Soundwave performance the way he had played the character 15 years ago?

I'm not sure. Soundwave and Megatron didn't have any scenes together so we didn't get to hear Welker and Hugo Weaving interact. But I think I would have preferred the more synthesized Soundwave voice and still be very, very glad Frank Welker was brought back.

BTW, I also would have liked Peter Cullen to do the traditional Ironhide with the southern drawl the way he'd always done Ironhide for G1.

    Your thoughts?

Soundwave sounded like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget...but I was still glad that the character made it to the big screen. He did his part well and maybe we'll see more of him in T3.

I think soundwaves voice was just fine. Not as good as G1 but better than most of the other voices in the film.

Definitely a Dr Claw vibe going there, half expected him to transform at the end and say "next time Prime, next time"

After seeing the movie yesterday and hearing the voice it reminded me of an episode from G1 Season 3 Webworld. I put the disc in and watched as there is a scene right at the opening where the Decepticons are looking for something called icetryte and Soundwave tells everyone that Ratbat has found something. They did not use the synthesizer for this part and his voice sounded identical to the movie. Like 23 years had not passed!
