I'd say there's some credability to that. The 8.1(?) that hit the New Madrid fault (around where this current one hit) in the early 1800s was felt as far away as Boston. This was nowhere near as strong, but I don't doubt that it was felt some distance away. Hopefully, something huge doesn't hit that area again. The early 1800s had three huge earthquakes in that area in a very short time, one of which REVERSED the flow of the Mississippi River and cause damaging temporary waterfalls. I think a few more people live along the river now.
Woke up to see all the pomp and circumstance for the anniversary of the 1906 quake here and then they were talking about the one that hit back east...
I live in Michigan, so I probably didn't even feel any vibrations from any earthquake. The only thing that could wake me up from a deep sleep is either a thunderstorm or my parents getting up to go to work.
Felt it here in Wisconsin too. Put it off as just a train going through, but then when I was taking the girl to school the radio was talking about the earthquake.
Felt it in Yorkville Illinois...I was having a rough time sleeping & just thought it was my body twitching. But after moving around a bit...it was still going... CNN says there are reports as far away as Florida on this one....
Yeah, exactly the same for us. I said, "I think that was an earthquake". To which my wife replied, "Yeah, right....".
I could have sworn my bed was wobbling when I woke up thismorning around 4:30, and my shelves were all making funny creaking noises. Then I thought to myself "that's crazy, we don't get earthquakes out here. We have tornadoes, it's our thing." and went back to bed. Imagine my surprise when I checked the news a few hours later...
The fact that California has remained quiet all this time still scares me. Especially now that I'm outta there but my parents and older sister's family isn't. According to CNN, people in Florida felt it? I didn't feel anything here in NoVa. I guess it's from living in California for so long.
I haven't felt anything up here in Ohio... As far as it being felt in Florida, pending on how the plates are lined up, in a matter of speaking, it could very well have shocked all the way down the line to Florida for all we know.
So that was an aftershock that just happened? I didn't think you got aftershocks that long after the initial quake.
Well... The rate of aftershocks is proportional to the inverse of time since the mainshock. Thus whatever the odds of an aftershock are on the first day, the second day will have 1/2 the odds of the first day and the tenth day will have approximately 1/10th the odds of the first day. These patterns describe only the mass behavior of aftershocks; the actual times, numbers and locations of the aftershocks are 'random', while tending to follow these patterns. As this is an empirical law values of the parameters are obtained by fitting to data after the mainshock occurred and they have no physical basis/meaning. Aftershocks are usually unpredictable, can be of a large magnitude, and can collapse buildings that are damaged from the mainshock. Bigger earthquakes have more and larger aftershocks and the sequences can last for years or even longer especially when a large event occurs in a seismically quiet area. So it is entirely possible.
I felt it here in Michigan. It felt like somebody just bumped into my bed. I thought at first that I must have dreamed it, but my boss mentioned that he felt it at his place this morning too.
didn't feel it in texas, good ole texas... anyways i hope everyone is okay and i hope nothing is broken ....time for a funny story lol cause i know if i had him standing during an earthquake he would jump for it i had the classics set up on my bed, megatron next to starscream...well one day megatron got mad at starscream and pushed him off the bed (TRUE STORY LOL my little bro accidentally hit megatron's fusion cannon causing megatron to spin and knock starscream off) and then bumblebee must of hated his life cause ever 30 minutes or so, he wold fall off the bed lol
