How much dialogue did Sideswipe, Que and Dino Get in DOTM.
I think Sideswipe had about 7 lines.
Dino/Mirage had 3 I think, if you count his laugh.
Que/Wheeljack got around 10 I think.
Wheeljack's lines were relatively long as well.
That is sad, no matter which way you try to slice it. Just showcases what virtual nonentities the TFs were.
Talking in Alt-Mode, cheap and easy way to do it, but totally ignored. Shame really.
QUE - (11)
-This gun is my perfect invention, Ironhide.
-Oh, good, you’re here! M’ name’s Que. I do hope you have answers for him. I’ve never seen him so upset.
-Wait a minute! I’m not letting you go out there without my urban combat prototypes!
-Hey! They’re great inventions for kicking @$$!
-Those are Boom-sticks, armed in thirty seconds. And grapple gloves, for climbing.
-Bee...I think they’re going to kill us.
-Wait, wait, wait! We surrendered! We’re your prisoners!
-Can’t we talk this out? We’re all a bunch of good chaps! I mean you no h-Argh!
-Why did you-
SIDESWIPE - (11)
-Dino, I got ‘em!
-Whoa. Little Mexican stand-off we got here.
-And we’ll let you escape with your dignity.
-Drop ‘em! That’s good.
-Ironhide, watch out!
-Ratchet, cover high!
-We gotta’ go, Que! Come on!
-Take it easy! We surrender.
DINO - (3)
-On the ground, per favore, and stay there!
-He’s a in a bad mood. He’s not a talkin’ to anybody today.
-Ha ha! Got ya’!
As much as I love Dino's design, he and Sideswipe would be easily mergeable into a single character. Other than "Dino, I got 'em!" (which, if changed to "Bumblebee, I got 'em!" would've made the following possible) by Sideswipe, there's practically no interaction between them; you could've taken one of those characters away and it wouldn't have affected anything. Changed Dino's interaction with the Iranian soldiers to Sideswipe, Dino in the NEST base to Sideswipe, Dino lassoing Hatchet into Sideswipe doing it. BAM. 3 more lines and like, 20% more Sideswipe screentime. I still argue that with these movies directed by Bay, the fewer robot characters, the better.
THIS. Even with the slightly increased and now accurate numbers, it's still sad.
To say nothing of radio chatter as background to the action sequences.
It was actually Got ya'! Ha ha ha ha.
If you want to be picky.
Huh... All this time I thought it was actions that defined a person, but it's really been an inability to keep their mouth shut?
Que also vanished for half the movie, while Dino spent nearly all his screentime in car mode so he might as well been a non sentient piece of equipment. Sideswipe though, actually got a decent showing for the Bay films, and much better than in ROTF.
They can talk in vehicle mode though (Jetfire and Skids do it in ROTF, Roadbuster does it in DOTM) they just rarely choose to do it. But hey it could have been worse. Initally the TFs weren't going to talk at all in the film.
When do Jetfire and Roadbuster talk in vehicle mode? I guess you could argue that Jetfire's "Stick the landing!" line was in vehicle mode, but to me it's always been said right when he enters robot mode.
Jetfire yells out "Incoming!!!" before saying "Stick the landing!"
I think Roadbuster says "Optimus! We're coming!" or something like that when Optimus is stuck in the cables.
Yeah, Jetfire says "Incoming" when he's still in jet mode. And when Roadbuster yells "Optimus, we're coming!" he's still in car mode.
Not to mention Arcee and The Twins can do it as well.
But never the less, they had few lines. Most of the lines were saved for Optimus, Sentinel, and the Humans...
Yeah they can talk in vehicle mode, I read the books!
And I really wish the Bots talked more than the humans. If I wanted to see humans talk, I would see a normal film.
Dino got severely shafted in terms of character and abilities.
Hey, can't believe I never noticed these ones until now. Or at least, it never clued in. Good call.
So we've got Arcee, The Twins, Jetfire and Roadbuster speaking in vehicle mode. Not bad.
I still think it would've been cool to have Que on the "Russian Gig" sequence.
And as for your last point: THIS. It was reported that the "uppity-ups" were hesitant to have the Transformers characters speaking, because it might be silly. (Although, handled correctly, it would've been so cool!)
One thing that people should also consider is movies of a similar nature with a plethora of CG (or perhaps simply expensive/time-consuming prosthetics) characters suffer similar problems. Look at the two Cats & Dogs movies. They have character that are more prominent and get more lines and characters that are very minor roles with very few lines. Or the Chronicles of Narnia movies. Or Pirates of the Caribbean. What are Davy Jones' men other than Decepticons? Maccus gets less time than Starscream. And the others barely get any. Just like these films. And it'll always be that way. When you've got 5-15 human characters and 12-20 robot characters, some characters are going to get the shaft.
