Over the past month or so I've really gotten into the Diaclone reboot with my kids. We love how the pieces come together to form different configurations. Because of this I immediately saw some potential for making custom pieces or whole toys that would interact with the real parts. So I'm starting this thread to document some of the experiments and things that I come up with.

Most of it'll be sketches, 3D models and then 3D prints. Right now I'm limited to PLA prints but might send some off to Shapeways or upgrade to an SLA printer. I hope folks find some of this interesting.

Here's the first piece I've done. I posted this in the Diaclone Reboot thread but didn't want to clog that up with more stuff. It's a transport that accepts the mech suit "pods" and can transport them. Right now that's the thing that excites me. Creating a vehicle that'll carry two or four of those in some sky crane type configuration.

This is a first pass sort of experiment. I hadn't done a 3d print in a while so I'm mostly trying to figure out the fitment of the print and diaclone parts. I am getting a longer print bed so once that comes in I'll try the 4 mech transport and be able to try more configurations. Right now this one is too stubby for my liking but I dig the Space 1999 Eagle vibe and might keep some of that. I also found a pic of a ground transport for the pods that looks like a proto takara never when through with.

I love this line. The scale offers a lot of possibilities. The compatibility of what you're doing is great. I like the Eagle vibe from it too.

I had a chance to do some sketching mocking up a design. Fitting 4 pods is just too much even if the longer print bed works out so probably sticking with 2 pods for now. I'll figure out the back/engines design and then detail this out in 3D.

    You, sir, are a Genius.

You could probably create a single "core" lifter, and design interchangeable legs, including treads and landing gear.

I decided to try a smaller project that'd print faster and let me play around with the mech suits in another way. So I started work on a jetpack like the one Takara makes but also influenced by Acroyear and the like. I think the takara one looks better because of it's placement and it feels beefier. But I'll iterate through some more. Maybe a set of wings like the old Dougram toy?

I've never used thingiverse and I don't have a Makerbot. I have a Printbot play. Can I still upload the files there? If so I'd be glad to share them. Though right now they're still work in progress. Glad you all are liking the work.

You should still be able to. A CAD file is a CAD file; any printer should be able to make use of it.

Yeah sure. I'll look into it. At worst I could always just post the STL file here if that's allowed.

You can upload any STL file to thingiverse. I don't have a makerbot either, but it is an excellent site to share and collect files.

Ok, I just made an account and uploaded the jetpack. Since I'm a new user I have to wait 24hours before it publishes. As soon as it's up I'll post a link. Thanks for the suggestion to do this.

Ok, here is a link to my "Things" page on Thingaverse. You should be able to download the jetpack and give it a go. As I make more stuff I'll add it to the list so folks and can try them out.

Let me know if you have any issues. This is my first time trying this out. Thanks.

I'm back on the transport vehicle and really want to get the 4 pods in there so I came up with another design. I'm pretty excited about where this is going. I'll add more structural detail on the top as well as attachment points for "repair arms" and "turrets" and random bits. Right now it's designed to work with the one diaclone driver cab but I'll try adding some more attach points to the front as well. I won't be able to print it until I get the larger print bed this weekend. This is really fun making accessories for my toys :)

Started a new design this weekend. This one fits onto the mech way better. I also made it modular so I can just try out different "jets" and pop those on. This also lets you angle the "jets". I'm probably going to model out a rough mech suit so I can better visualize things as I'm working in 3D.
