Thought I would do a quick review for both sets. They've been on preorder with BBTS forever (since 2010), they apparently finally got released last year (2011) but I only managed to obtain them this year (2012).

If you already got Diablock G1 Convoy, you know what to expect quality-wise; Lego and Kre-o bricks are superior. The bricks are not bad, but they feel slightly KO-ish.

Both kits are fairly easy to build, instructions are clear, they took me less than an hour each.

End result? The figures are decently sturdy and can be transformed with ease without fear of breaking anything.

Optimus Prime's transform is pretty ease, it reminds me a lot of Animated Activator Optimus Prime. Pretty gappy in alt mode, and 8 wheels? Visible face? Robot mode, despite the funky head (thank God there's a sticker to better define it), is decent and quite poseable. Tires are rubber btw. Oh, and no clicky joints, just ball joints.

Bumblebee's transformation is more involved, quite interesting actually. Robot mode is decently articulated but hard to balance because of how the feet are designed (feet can't sit flat, toes are taller). Plus Bumblebee is slightly back-heavy. And again, the face sticker saves the day. What's cool is that the hands lock the car mode by grabbing the rear of the car. Sadly, the all-plastic wheels look cheap. Why no rubber wheels?

Anyway, despite all the flaws, both sets have their charm. Get them if you like brick sets, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, anything unusual that transforms.

I agree with you, they have their charm while still being obviously flawed.

This is the kind of stuff that, if posted in Radicons, would be showered in positive opinions, but being an "official" (they are, right?) release, everyone just says it's poo.

Thanks for posting the pictorial review.

    Yes, they're a Kawada/Tomy partnership.

It would have been so easy to make the heads poseable (or to hide Prime's head in alt mode), I don't know what they were thinking. I'm pretty sure I can easily redesign Prime to hide the head, there's room for that.
